Description:

Roughly 130 Calories in a 1 cup serving of potato. There is very little sugar in a potato, which is a huge plus in our eyes.

Why Potatoes Are A Highly Underrated Food

Most people eat potatoes in the form of French Fries and Potato Chips, which have a ton of unhealthy fat in them. (Important to note that there are some healthy fats out there.)

People also eat baked potatoes, loaded with cream and cheese. However, if you take a look at the nutrition label on this page you will see that potatoes are high in an array of important vitamins and minerals.

Potatoes are a good source of Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, copper, potassium and manganese.

Additionally, potatoes are now thought to containphytochemicals and phytonutrients- which have powerful health promotingproperties.

Can Potatoes Help You "Diet?"

According to the US National Institute For Health (NIH) Vitamin B6 helps your body maintain normal blood glucose or blood sugar levels. For those of you who go on a diet, and rely primarily on calorie reduction (a mistake in our view), Vitamin B6 can help you out. According to the NIH "When caloric intake is low your body needs vitamin B6 to help convert stored carbohydrate or other nutrients to glucose to maintain normal blood sugar levels."

What is interesting is that potatoes are one of the best sources of Vitamin B6. According to the NIH, only bananas and chickpeas have similar levels.

For those of you who are really getting into PEERtrainer, you know that we talk a lot about "nutrient density" and about finding the foods with the highest nutrient content. Whenever you see a food that has a quantifiable amount of a nutrient, AND a wide array of those nutrients, odds are that you are looking at a food that is likely to benefit your health in a variety of ways.

All of the weight loss recipes that we create at PEERtrainer help you to "sneak" in as many nutrients as possible, and we make sure that you get as many nutrients you can on a per calorie basis.
