Can I lose weight while still breastfeeding?

I am still breastfeeding my 14 month old baby and I have started getting down to business with my exsercising and eating healthy. I also take a pil a couple of times a datl to give me more energy called "Extreme Lean". On the bottle it said nothing about not taking it while nursing so I assumed it is safe to take. It is all natural. Is it possible to still lose weight while breastfeeding?

I'd say talk to a doctor or a pharmasist (sp?) before taking your pill...you don't want to mess around with a new born! (I just learned that babies under a year can't eat honey - who would have imagined. And honey is all natural, etc, too.)

Also, there was another thread a long time ago about losing weight while breastfeeding. Try a search for it. I believe the long and the short of it is that you can definitely lose weight while breastfeeding, but it might not be the "magic" you are looking for.

It is certainly possible to lose weight while breastfeeding. I wouldn't recommend taking any kind of weight loss concoctions while doing it. Just go the reducing calories/increasing exercise way. Any pills you take will go through your breast milk to your baby.

I would urge you to discuss any pills/supplements, etc with your doctor while breastfeeding. It does pass through to your newborn which is why you limit alcohol, caffeine, etc. That said, I have many friends that lost weight while breastfeeding. You can burn north of 500 calories a day, depending! I would make sure though your "diet" is rich with nutrients. This is an important time of development for your baby and they can use the best head start that we have to offer, be it breastfeeding, formula, whatever.

If it is "all natural" as you say and is an herbal supplement it may not be required to carry that warning as it would not fall under FDA regulation. That doesn't make it safe and certainly not safe for a newborn to ingest (via your breast milk). As others have suggested, if you are dead-set on taking this - please discuss it with your physician.

Your hormones can also play a part in your weight while breastfeeding. Your body needs to have fat reserves to lactate. (Even if you feel yours are more than enough.) I would recommend eating healthy, exercising, and holding off on the pills and serious efforts to lose weight until after baby is weaned. It's a very special time with your baby and a wonderful gift you're giving to both of you!

Thank you

Thank you everyone for posting back to me on this matter! I am going to stop taking these energy pills for now...I just don't want to mess up my baby in any way!! I am hoping to stop nursing when she is two. I am just going to continue with the excercising and eating healthy. I just seem to have no energy at all since not taking this pill as well, I am waaaay more hungry. I didn't take them today and feel so drained!!!! But I think I just need to drink more water and have a little more self control!!

If you're hungry all the time, look at the kinds of foods that you're eating. If you're getting enough protein, fiber and fat, you shouldn't be hungry. If you're doing all that, and you're still hungry, talk to your doctor or a nutritionist about that, as well. If you're trying to lose weight by cutting down on fats, that might be why you're hungry. Remember, "fats" don't turn to fat on your body nearly as easily as carbs do; healthy fats are not the enemy.

Take in some carbs 1 hour before working out so you don't slow down.

And you certainly can lose weight while breastfeeding--in fact that is the best time to lose your pregnancy weight. I suggest talking to a professional nutritionist, so that you get the right proportion of vitamins for you and your baby.

Good luck!

GOOD CALL!

Definitely stop taking any sort of "natural" supplement while breastfeeding - who knows what is in them and whether or not they are harmful to your child. Also, it's important to not lose a lot of weight quickly, if you do, toxins can be released into your body which then are released in breast milk.

Yes you can, but don't think that you will lose weight by only breast feeding.

You also need to focus on the nutritional quality of your diet. This will help both you and your baby. A diet high in green vegetables will help in this area. You also need a diet that takes into account your sheer exhaustion at this time.

The PEERtrainer Cheat System works to address both the need to increase the greens and overall micronutrient intake, while keeping in mind you live in the real world and need a break:
