Not counting hunger, what are the three main reasons you eat and how does that influence your weight control strategies?
--Tiredness . I hope in time to be able to take a nap/rest instead of turning to food when I am tired to prop me up and keep me going
--Emotional needs- I eat when I am lonely or upset. I am going to try to go out to a public spot like a library to see if being out and about/talking to people can lessen thsi type of overeating
--Boredom. I eat at nite because I am bored, hate TV etc. Am going to try having a better supply of books available.

Eating is pleasure
This may sound basic but Eating is one of the few pleasrues that I have in my life that is easily availble, legal, relatively inexpensive, and doesn't reguire a partner--
maybe I need to crank up my sex life????

ha! that was funny, but I agree with you. I enjoy food and I love it. Unfortunately, it doesn't love me back and I have the ass to show for it!
But, boredom, emotions, and tiredness rank right up there, too.

I really only have 2
I really only have 2. The first one is sheer boredom. I'll be watching tv and want somethng, then the next thing I know, instead of a few chips or a piece of candy I've eaten a ton more.
The other is my mouth gets dry. I try water, but it doesn't work. I usually try to turn to something portioned, so that I don't keep going, because I only need a little for my mouth to not be dry anymore.

My main 3 reasons for eating:
energy: I work out a lot and can't do it without fuel
health: I eat a ton of fruit and veggies even if I'm not very hungry, it's important to stay full on healthy things!
routine: I have a set eating routine and stick with it everyday, I know how much I'm eating every day and don't vary from it too much.

I am weird. I go into preservation mode. As if i will ever get another healthy meal again. Esp. if I am busy or dont have control over my calendar or am traveling. I try to make smart choices, but I think that my portion size is out of wack b/c I get scared that if I dont have it now then I wont be able to....
Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 12:30 PM
Tiredness and stress are my two. I also go into hibernation mode in the winters and eat a lot more in the evenings. I can eat great all day, but night time kills me.

Wanna team up?
OP...and all that shared the same reasons, Tiredness, emotions and DEFINITELY boredom are my main reasons for diet failure as well.... perhaps we should start a group based around combating those things in particular. Emotions and boredom atleast ( tiredness is a toughie lol).
In our logs we could include the exact reasons that led us to make our food decisions, and we could discuss each others logs to identify steady patterns and lend support etc.
I know it seems like a pretty basic group...but I know I really struggle daily with those 3 factors and would love to find a group that went a little deeper than calories and exercise:)

I have a few reasons why I eat.
1:Boredom
2:Stress/emotions
3:Because it's there and it tastes good.
I think that there should be a group or team started. These are my biggest weeknesses. And I know that if I could just work on these I would be golden. I exercise every day but it doesn't matter because I eat like shit!!!!
Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 1:59 PM
I'm game if you guys are.
How about a team instead of a group to help more people out.

Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 1:59 PM
I think a team would be awesome!!! Im in when one forms!!

Why do I eat?
1 Emotional reasons. I have made myself make healthier choices but I still eat emotionally.
2 food tastes good. I love the way I cook (healthy) and enjoy every bite.
3 Food is a friend. A comfort. I suppose that would go along with the emotional but it can be shield.
Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 2:53 PM
we still need a name.
does anyone like Y EAT ?
Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 3:30 PM
Let's go with Y Eat. I was trying to come up with a name too; I would definitely join!
Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 3:35 PM
Fatigue
bored when driving. For this I get plain puffed corn -- v. low cal, crunchy
tastes good. Hey, food is a sensual pleasure. Having sex makes me want to eat more! (for the above poster who asked if he/she needed a better sex life) This is the tough one for me, just taking one bite of something wonderful and savoring it.

Y Eat? has begun
I took the liberty of starting up this team. Please join!
Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 3:38 PM

Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 3:40 PM

Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 3:42 PM

1. I'm hungry
2. tastes delicious
I don't eat for emotional reasons or out of boredom. Just for real honest to goodness hunger. But then when it tastes really really good, I keep eating even after I'm full. Just for the delicious taste in my mouth. Gotta quit that!
Thursday, January 17, 2008, 10:37 AM
then join our group! Y eat!
Thursday, January 17, 2008, 10:48 AM
tired,
I definitely eat when I'm tired I think that's why a friday night feels harder than a tuesday night. working on going to bed early when I need it even if it's friday not "staying up to eat"
2. emotionally I have tried to catch myself feeling agitated or procrastinating by "i'll call my friend and tell her something I don't want to after I finish this snack.
3like everyone else bored / or cause it's there.
Good post idea now I don't feel so alone!

I haven't seen this one up here...
I eat out of habit. It is habit to grab a handful of something when I walk past the pantry. It is habit to buy Baked Lays from the vending machine. I'm working hard to break both of these habits. But that's what it is - not hunger, not boredom, not emotion. Just habit.

hunger
health
occasional cravings
Saturday, January 19, 2008, 11:27 PM
3:00pm - I just came to this realization myself!! Yesterday. I got a phone call and when I hung up I pivoted, opened the pantry and got a handful of chips. And it just occurred to me that I do this a lot. I eat during and after phone calls - what's up with that??
1. Habit
2. Boredom
3. Stress relief
This all happens at night after the kids are in bed. If I eliminated the eating I do between 7:30-10:30pm - I would've been at my goal weight years ago! Sounds like it's time to eliminate that night time eating.
Sunday, January 20, 2008, 9:26 AM
Boredom, Boredom and Boredom....really that's my only reason.
Wednesday, January 23, 2008, 2:29 AM
Has anyone ever had that HUGE peice of chocolate cake at Red Lobster??? OMG I didn't eat the whole thing but...wow. Thats what it is for me...I can't stop my cravings. And then i'll tell myself i'm only going to eat a little...but then It's like I can't stop if it's still sitting there! It's horrible! I try to avoid restaurants that don't havea wide variety of desserts b/c i know if i see them, i won't be able to resist!
Wednesday, January 23, 2008, 8:13 AM
Eat Til It's Gone
I will generally eat until the portion is gone. So I am trying those 100 cal (single serving type ) microwave popcoen bags and I generally do better having 2 bites of my husband's dessert when we eat out. ( and yes I have eatne that whole Red Lods chock cake dessert)
Some have suggested to have the waiter cut the porion in half and oput it in a container BEFORE it even hits the table....
Wondering if I could do that????
Wednesday, January 23, 2008, 1:17 PM
Join Y Eat and we'll walk you through it! we're all there for the same reason--we eat when we don't need to eat.
