What do you really think of Barak Obama?

I think this forum is perfect for honest answers because of the anon factor. The one thing I don't like? Oprah is pushing him so hard. Other than than, I think he's smart.

I am not a dem or a rep but I sort of like Obama. He has fresh views and ideas and he is sort of in between everything, he's a little bit dem, rep and liberal. It would be interesting to see what he could do in office BUT his fall back is that he really has no experience at all. Personally I don't want someone with no experience running and making decisions for our country. I think if he doesn't make it in this time possibly the 2012 or 2016 election would be good choices. But of course that gives him time to become jaded and corupt in the political world.

Don't like him at all! The one thing that ticks me off the most is that he states that his religion prohibits him from putting his hand over his heart and reciting the pledge of allegience, and he wants to the the president of the United States? Whatever! The other thing I can't stand is like a previous poster stated, Oprah is touting him like crazy. Why, because he's black and so is she? I just think that's wrong! Just because I'm female doesn't mean I'm going to vote for Hillary or that I agree with her views! So frustrating that she's using her celebrity status to get people on the bandwagon with her on this one candidate. That is just WRONG!!! !

There's nothing wrong with someone using their celebrity to endorse a candidate - all of the candidates have their high profile cheerleaders. It's up to the voters to decide who they're going to listen to - the candidate or their favorite actor, talk show host, or muscian.

Experience hasn't really yielded great results as far as the current administration goes - so it's kind of a nonfactor for me.

Politicians...especially those who have climbed the ladder far enough to compete on the national level...have mastered the art of persuasion and promises. Beyond the glibness of the Obamas and Clintons you have to look at their record. Being a (very) short term member of the Senate is hardly a qualifier for the Presidency. In his case Obama has showed his naivite on multiple occasions. All the personality and speech writers in the world cannot overcome the lack of experience he has in actually managing a multiple agency government entity or a multiple department business. Being a "representative" is NOTHING like being the President of the United States. Obama's biggest asset is that he doesn't screech at his opponents like a rude, spoiled child. I guess that does put him miles ahead of his Democrat competition.
With regard to the Oprah thing, I agree with one of the previous posters that all the cadidates have their famous cheerleaders backing them. I don't hold any of the Oprah stuff against Obama, however, I think Oprah is once again showing her true "colors" and supporting him so avidly because he is a black man. Her speech with him turned my stomach, she was laying on a heavy black effected accent, so I wonder, which is the real Oprah, the one we see every afternoon on TV who speaks without any accent or the very black sounding (on purpose) i think Oprah who stood up in front of thousands of people in Chicago last month? She was always up the Clinton's @sses before Obama came into the picture, then she jumped ship. I am not prejudiced I'm mixed myself (my Dad is black and my Mom is white). Most of my black relatives even agree Oprah is only getting so involved as never before because of his color.

obama is very charismatic, young and fresh. But what experience do he is really have? He has got no street credibility, what are his views? What is his foreign policy views? Hw is going to make our country better after Bush has screwed things up for us. With only 20% of the country that actually vote who is who lead our country? I dont know, I am not big on Obama just cause he appeals to young people I want a man or woman of substance. I have found this libertarian candidate very intriguing. RON PAUL is the best candidate out there and no one knows bout him because he is not get any media coverage.

I agree with those that stated not liking him for his stand against putting his hand over his heart..it is an actual law I heard on the news that states that you are suppose to actually place your hand over your heart during the pledge. I also saw on the news that if God forbid he was elected he refuses to take the oath the way every president has he has stated he will only use the muslims way to be sworn in. I must say he will not get my vote...I am am definatly not impressed with these facts I feel as though there is a lot to a man who wants to break so many traditional things in our country ya know the one he supposedly wants to run. We all have a lot of praying to do b/c it is as though we all have to choose the least evil canidate to become president. I am curious to keep watching and learning about them. I have my eye on McCain .
Thanks for putting the question out here,This is why I love being a born American, we can actually all voice our opinions freely with no consequences, except perhaps educating each other b/c so much of the media is one sided.

Freedom of religion is important BUT when the President of the United States can't be bothered to put his hand over his heart for the Pledge of Alligence, or be swore into the Presidency the way every other President of this country has, I take offense. But I am not worried, I believe that if he makes the dems, it will certainly be the reps running this country again for the next 4 years. I don't' think the majority of voters, dems included, are ready for a non-experienced, muslim leader. I think there is a large majority of voters out there who fear muslims, especially with 9/11 and the war going on and all that seems the media tells us about muslims. He is a smart man and I always find it unfortunate that we never get to hear how the canidates plan on making the changes happen.

8:20, I would be lying if I said that thought hadn't crossed my mind. What about the whole terrorist radical muslim movement? They do want to infiltrate the world, they have said as much and anyone who doesn't believe their ways don't deserve to be here. Why is no one bringing this up? Obama talks a good talk but when it comes down to it I think I would be scared having a Muslim in power of one of the greatest countries in the world, a country that the radical muslims hate, it opens up a lot of things and issues. Most politicians are liars why is it so many believe he is for OUR people and not maybe just some radical who is bullshitting us all? Look at 9/11, we have to all admit that although it was the most horrific tragedy in our current history by terrorists, that it was an absolutely brilliant plan, a plan that was in the making for over a decade, whos to say that placing Obama in a position of ultimate power isn't another brilliant move on the radical muslims part? These are things I think about. I do know a few muslims that are not radical and even they think and wonder about things such as that. I think its a non-issue though, I don't believe that even if Obama makes it as the dem he will get in office, I believe if he does make it to dem can that we will have another rep in office, if that does happen I hope it is someone like Huckabee or Romney.

And the person who wished Al Gore was running again, shame on you. He is done as far as politics go.

I've read through all the postings and am trying to figure out where the story started that Obama is Muslim? He is Protestant (I believe Baptist). This sounds like fear-mongering. And this is exactly what the Bush Administration wants. Be fearful of the stranger, of your neighbor. That way you are preoccupied and won't ask questions like...why are we in Iraq?

In reference to the Muslim situation... he is not Muslim. Please read any bio on him, including independent ones. Just because you have a Middle Eastern sounding name does not mean you are Muslim. He has African ancestry but he has chosen the Christian faith which I think, if you are looking from a religious perspective (and I am not), speaks more than someone who simply grew up in a Christian denomination. But reading into a name is prejudice and ignorance. You can be named Christina McDouglas and be Jewish or Muslim or whatever.

But back to the topic of the thread - I think he is very liberal, moreso than I. I am wary about government programs like universal healthcare. But I am also very open to and excited about change. He is young, motivated and fresh - just what we need.

Yes, he lacks experience in politics. But some of our greatest presidents weren't big poticitians. Look where politicians have gotten us! He has a LOT of experience in life, including internationally, and also in making big differences through small changes in communities. His passion, honesty and clear direction sell me way more than Hilary's well rehearsed talking points.

Oh and one more thing - his race doesn't even factor in to me. I don't think for one moment he has tried to ride on it. For heaven's sake he is related to Dick Cheney on his mom's side! He has just as much "all-American" white heritage as he does African, if not more, because he was raised by a white mother. Not to mention, I believe his step-father's family has Asian background. We talk about the melting pot but put people in office who grew up in country clubs. How about we let our leader represent the change we want to see in America?

As far as universal health care goes we all better be careful about that. Who the hell do you think is going to pay for that? Anyone who makes over 60K a year thats who. Another thing if that does happen you can bet your ass that a lot of small businesses will be closing because they can't afford health care. Not to mention taxes for everyone will go up and I mean EVERYONE. Dems are famous for raising taxes and guess what, its not just on middle income or the wealthier, where do you think they get the money to start new social programs, ones that we don't even need and most of the country don't want.

Out with the OLD and In with the NEW

Bottom line I am so tired of the OLD politicians and their OLD ways! Bring some NEW life to the presidency.... after reading all the posts I'm gearing toward Obama as I wasn't before. Remember Oprah is just one voice, and many people could care less who she backs. She can do whatever she pleases with her money. The Muslim thing... I don't want to believe the hype. The cocaine incident blew over really fast so now something new has to pop up in its place. This country still has a lot of good ole boys who are stupid and prejudice and they will show up to vote. As far as the incident with Bhutto, completely different things. She was the hope for a better change and it was inevitable that she was killed. They exiled her years ago, murdered her family but still she kept going. She was a threat to their whole way of life and country, there is no way they would have let her shared power.

Keep the bedroom out of it! If Hillary wanted to stay by her man, that is her personal, personal choice. I don't think we should judge her merits to lead the country on whether or not she stuck it out or not. Let's ask leaders of foreign countries that question, and let them decide.

I believe we should look at how they speak to us and how they would lead if given the chance. I felt very connected with what Ms. Clinton said. Mr. Obama was constantly spending his time on confronting questions presented to him. Several times Ms. Clinton gave them the opportunity to shift their focus onto her with negative comments, and rarely did they match her on it or trump her on it. Only Edwards did once, and my respect level for him went way up last night.

I think Richardson made a great show as well. For all the hoopla surrounding Obama, the other candidates are really pulling out ahead on the issues. Obama was too much on a treadmill. The others really imprinted their messages last night. I can't even remember what Obama said...Change - yeah, okay, change. Got it. Question: how are you planning on doing that?

On the more serious side, unfortunately Clinton or Obama will get in, Edwards just is not in the running at all, nor should he be. Fortunately I think whoever gets in for the dems won't take office. There are way to many who dislike Clinton, and really lets look at her record, what has she really done for NY that she said she would? Nada! I do think she stayed by her hubby's side for the ride and I agree, that if she doesn't get in and doesn't get elected it won't be long before they are over. She needed him to pull this off. Obama, this country, sadly, is just not there yet and plus he's inexperienced. And yes I do believe the other Presidents had way more experience then he does. Is he really muslim?? I don't think so, if he is then he's has the cover up of history in the making. On the other hand some poster raise interesting questions, it would be the ultimate in for the radical muslims, but I would like to think that our security by now or even some dirt digger would have come up with something on him connecting him to anything extremist, but so far he's pretty clean. Do I trust him? Personally I don't trust any politician, they all say what the parties want to hear them say, they never really talk about the issues, they never talk about any plan of action to make change, they skirt the real questions and never really answer anything. They are all the same. If I had to vote dem I would have to choose Obama, inexperience and all just because I can't stand HRC, she's a fake and full of shit. If I had to choose a rep I would choose either Huckabee or Romney. I would never choose a liberal they are just to far out there for my likes. This year I am going for the rep candidate, I do like Giuliani, he's a little bit of both and I think he was actually was good for NY, but he is not doing to well. And God let us hope McCain doesn't make it.

Some long time MA government employees (we are talking years) were hired as "temps" so they didn't get any health insurance (or other) benefits....then the law changed so all MA residents are required to have health insurance. What kind of governing is that? The present governor has changed their status to full employee.

I am a Hillary supporter also and wonder why people keep talking about "no more Clintons"? I mean, come on, this Country was in pretty good shape when Bill & Hillary left it to Bush. Obama does not have the experience and I don't think he will be able to change much of anything in 4 years, it will take that long just to clean up the mess that our country is being left in. People need to realize that politics will always be politics, too big a machine to change that. They are all in the political fishbowl, some just have a longer, better track record.

Excellent op-ed piece in today's NYT. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/08/opinion/08steinem.html?em&ex=1199941200&en=e3d49753c7f6da32&ei=5087%0A

It's a good piece no matter who you support -- read the first paragraph and ask yourself the question honestly!

Damn what sort of bubble are you living in? I guess you forgot all the military and intelligence cuts Clinton did, look what happen with those cuts. I guess you have also forgotten the higher taxes for certain incomes, oh wait, maybe you are one of those that were lucky and didn't make much money then. Personally I have a big friggin problem with social programs being funded by tax increases, programs we don't need. Programs that keep people in the program instead of getting them out. I'm sick of paying 39% of my earned money to pay for other peoples problems and worst of all I'm sick of what the dem party has become. I was once a dem but now I'm not.

Here's an article from ABC News, interviewing Obama. He says the pic was taken out of context, during the Star Spangled Banner, and not during the pledge of allegiance.

"I was taught by my grandfather that you put your hand over your heart during the pledge, but during the Star Spangled Banner, you sing!" Obama said.

Oh, and in the article linked above, there is another link, to a video of the event, which can prove that the photo was not taken during the Pledge of Allegiance.
