HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE???
I gave up all diet drinks (diet soda especially) recently. I've been having these persistent headaches that come on after lunch (usually the time I'd be having a diet coke). How long before I adjust? I don't want to drink green tea- I just want to drink water and other herbal, non-caffeinated teas!
The headaches are making it near impossible to work out!

can be at least 2-3 weeks, sometimes a month to go through the withdrawl.
worth it for your health though...

Congratulations on breaking the habit! I know it's tough. I used to be a major Diet Coke addict. The person who responded is right, It can take a white to clear it out of your system. Two things that helped me deal with it was to drink lots and lots of water and also to get enough sleep. I was pretty tired while I was detoxing.

2-3 wks for me.
Ugh! Quitting diet coke was worse than quiting smoking! I am ashamed to admit that it didn't last as long either. Now I have to go through that again! I whimiper at the thought :-(

Op here. Thanks! Question: Do you think it would be nuts to have a diet coke occasionally? Will that just reverse all the trouble I'm going through now?

To the person who relapsed into drinking Diet Coke's again. If you haven't been drinking them that long (or as frequentely as you did pre-first quit, the detox shouldn't be as bad as the first time. Of course, if you've gone back to the same habits and keep it up..it'll pretty much be more of the same.
To the OP - if you have one now and again you should be fine. Just make sure you don't slip back into the old routine.
I quit drinking it a few years ago. After about six months I had a stomach ache and thought I should sip some coke. It tasted horrible to me. Definitely not the same taste I remembered. If you stay away from it your taste buds will change you may find you don't like it any longer. If it's the bubbles you like, try Perrier. Or you can also get some 100% pure cranberry juice and mix a little bit of it with seltzer water. Both are nice (and healthy alternatives). Just go easy on the juice.

oh yeah, I get the 100% pure UNSWEETENED cranberry juice. It's really low cal and no added sugar other than the fruit. You can find it at whole foods

great tip, thanks so much!! I think the fizzies are what I look for every now and again...it became a bad habit, though. It's more appropriate to have it every now and then because that's about as often as I'll indulge in those foods that I want the soda with (pizza, chinese food, mexican, etc.)
:)

you can get low sugar fruit spritzers by knudsens, or you can buy fruit concentrates and add club soda to it for the fizzies.

I have a diet coke probably once or twice a week, and I've never had any problems from it.
If you want to get off of it slowly, either switch to tea or coffee for a bit (something with caffeine, but no fizz) or caffeine-free diet coke (same flavor, but no caffeine). Then you can get off of one thing at a time. Otherwise, try and limit yourself - if you normally drink 5 cans a day, drop back to 2, and then 1, and then half a glass, etc.... Soon it'll be gone totally.
Actually, an ex of mine quit smoking in a similar way... We were camp counselors, and we were only allowed to leave camp once a week; one trip out of camp, he only bought 1 pack of cigarettes, and he knew that he had to make them last all week. So, he was down to 2 a day, essentially, so he only had one when he REALLY needed it! The next weekend, again, he only bought one pack, and I think that one lasted like 2 or 3 weeks! Then I don't think he bought any more! **before all this, though, he probably smoked a pack every 2-3 days, he wasn't like a 2-pack-a-day smoker or anything...

Lemon
Has anyone tried True Lemon, I pulled it up in a search engine and it sounds good but I can't find it in the stores. It has no artificial sweetners, no sugar and you can add it to water or even food. I will try one more store and if I can't find it, I will order on-line.

I have drank diet coke for around 30 years, about 6 cans a day or more. I gave it up totally a year ago and only drink water. I do drink unsweetened ice tea maybe once a week. My doctor told me drinking diet coke or any soft drink makes you crave sweets. Being off diet coke for a year now my overall appearance is great. i.e. my skin looks healthier and I sleep alot better too. No one can tell you what to do ask your doctor.
Keep smiling!
