How will you be part of the 10%?
Last night on the Biggest Loser, they threw out the stat that 90% of people regain the weight they lose. I am one of the 10% who has lost the weight and generally kept it off for 5 years+. In that time I have gained back 15-20 lbs on about 5 or 6 different occasions, but have always battled back.
My question to you is, what are you going to do to ensure you are one of the 10%?

I too am one of the 10%, yahoo! Lost almost 100 pounds ten years ago, am still working to lose the last ten but keeping the majority of it off for that long has done me a world of good. It is all about that anomoly - Lifestyle Changes! If you don't do that and you treat the "diet" as a short term fix you will NOT be successful and will go back to what you were before if not higher. THROW all of YOUR FAT CLOTHES away! That's what I did, the biggest size in my closet was then an 8, if it got tight I'd better get back on the bandwagon because who can afford to get a whole new wardrobe? This mentality has helped me keep it all in perspective and stick with it.

I am one of the 10% I have maintained over a 155 pound loss for six years now and have lost 41 more pounds. so I will continue to watch what I eat and exercise.

I'm going to be one of those 10%. It's been 15 months for me so far, since I changed my life, and 53 lbs / 4 sizes gone. People say you can get rid of 2 lbs a week, but for me it went much more slowly than that. Maybe a few oz, sometimes a lb or 2. A few times a lb or 2 found it's way back to me, but I quickly got back on track firguring out food combinations and portion sizes that work for me as my body changes. I still have 120+ lbs to go, but I'm determined to get rid of it.
My key mindset is that I'm not on a diet and I'm not losing weight. I changed my life by changing my lifestyle habits, and as a result the excess weight is leaving me. It's not LOST, because I don't intend for it to ever be FOUND. I GOT RID OF IT, so that means its GONE FOREVER.

I love that tip from 8:17 to throw away he fat clothes and only keep the size you want to be.. if that starts getting tight, then its a wake up call. great idea!

Small changes have all added up to my new lifestyle. I will never gain it back because I'll always keep my health a priority. I may gain a bit during a future pregnancy, but I know I will keep my good habits and get back down where I'm comfortable.

Wow - reading this I just realized I'm going on 5 years. I actually lost my weight before I came to PeerTrainer. However I still track what comes in and goes out just like my money, plus I like the group interaction. The second I stop watching the little things just add up. I agree about the lifestyle change - I'm a really different person all around these days. I like different foods (including stuff I thought I'd never like), have a more active lifestyle (I hike more than I watch TV), and am just generally more confident and outgoing. Even though I go out and entertain more than I ever did when I was bigger, I'm not afraid to say "I just can't have that in my diet". I don't get defensive - I'm just matter-of-fact and folks seem to respect that cause I don't get a lot of the grief I've read about in some of the threads here.
I am well aware that I weighed too much before and it can come back just as easily now as it did the first time. So yes - I'm vigilant, but it's not really a chore like I thought it would be. You just have to be consistent.

exercise! Every study ever done on people who maintain weight loss long-term say that the most important thing is daily exercise.
and keeping a log of my weight in excel, with a graph. That way, if I see myself trending up, I refocus on all my good habits, start logging again, or change up my workouts so that I bring my weight back down to the norm.
ps - I'm sort of one of the 10%. I've kept the weight off for just over a year.

It looks like there are several people here who are part of that 10%. You know why I think that is? Because they're here!
Not just here on PT but here as in still working on maintaining their weight and healthy lifestyle. They didn't just say "I did it!" and than slowly go back to their old way of life. They are still working on it everyday.
Congrats to all of you and thanks for being a good example for the rest of us!! I love meeting people here on PT who are here to maintain because it reminds me that I will never really be "done".

I will weigh myself weekly, continue to journal on PT and always renew my gym memberships.

909 here again.. I did the math and I have lost a totaol of 181 pounds . I agree with the idea of throwing out old clothes that dont fit . you will never go back to that size. I also like buying something in the size I want to be and working my way into it.
I intend to stay on pt. log everyday and stay accountable to myself and others.
I do enjoy food.. just in moderation. I dont believe in denying yourself anything.. denying only leads to binging. so if you want a piece of pizza have it but watch how much you eat and have a huge salad with it.
I am not done on this journey. I have 34 pounds left to release from my body forever.. not lose. release. I dont ever want to find those pounds again. I will continue to walk, eat well. and do other forms of exercise. maintaining I believe is sometimes just as hard as losing weight.
we can do this together everyone..
workiinit keep working it girl.. I am so proud of you..

I think it's very telling that lots of people who are in that 10% are still here on PT, logging and posting. I think it tells me that I still need to be accountable and log my food, even when I'm maintaining.

I guess I am part of the 10%, after reading these posts! That is so gratifying to kow for me, since my weight loss has been slow as ....
I was at my high about 5 years ago, I was 267. I am now about 220. I lingered about 240 for a long time, but have never gained from that, only lost some more. I think the slow weight loss helps you to assimilate the slight changes better. You don't replace your wardrobe as quickly, but then, if the weight doesn't come back, that is better.
This is an encouraging thread; thanks to whomever started it.
