My sister and brother in law just sent us a Christmas basket! How nice!!??? No!! It's about 50 pounds of chocolates, truffles, cheeses, chocolate covered nuts, etc!! Oh my Gosh!! What were they thinking??!!

You know, they weren't thinking anything at all, except maybe how much they would like to get something so nice themselves.
Perhaps you can donate some of this to a shelter where people wouldn't ordinarily have specialty foods like that?

My in-laws may be thinking the same thing about what we sent :-) Except I opt for the Christmas basket full of fruits, nuts, SF chocolate, cheese and crackers. My SO's grandfater has diabetes so we have to watch what we send him (he can't have certain fruits, etc). The 'Healthy Tower of Treats' from Harry and David meets his restrictions, so we just send one to all the grandparents. Personally I like it better than the one filled with all the (nice) junk food. And for most of them it cuts down on the cooking they feel obligated to do since they can just bring it out when relatives visit.

Every year my grandma gets us a big box of fruit from the local Future Farmers of America (HS kids come around selling them as a fund raiser) and we love it. The fruit is always excellent quality - better than the grocery store carries for sure. I honestly think that's the gift I look forward to most.

PP here - I meant to add that perhaps you could hint that you would be interested in a healthier basket in the future.

I have to say though I prefer gifts of food to many things. My MIL has a habit of buying me insavely lavish 'girly' gifts that make me really uncomfortable (I'm a very minimalistic tomboy) - and she obviously wants so badly for me to like them that I just dread opening stuff from her. Food I can just throw out and say it was delicious.

Can you serve it at any gatherings at your house?

You know, my dear friend brought us over a card and a bag full of her homemade goodies. At first I was a little miffed, but then I realized that I would have "mom-stuff" for my kids and family and I wouldn't have to bake it - cause I loved licking the spoon/bowls. So, by changing it that way I was really happy about it and considered her very thoughtful. Now, who knows her real intentions, but whatever!!!

Re-gift it or break it down and hand it out to co-workers who aren't trying to lose a few.

LOL, this thread made me laugh. I don't have a solution, but it was funny. I completely understand. Everytime i turn around at work there is a new basket of candy and cookies from our drug reps, co-workers, etc... UGH! I feel ya!

You know, I had a boss that I think I got along famously with. We were so in tune at work, and often went out after work to get a salad and a drink with a few other co-workers. I knew she respected me as a colleague and appreciated me as an assistant (based on the merit increases and bonuses), and I thought she really liked me as a person. But every special day she would bring me a huge bag or basket full of all sorts of chocolates (100-piece bag of Reeces cups, several bags of Brach's Bridge mix, etc.). I never knew -- REALLY -- if she loved me or hated me...
