Bananas - a diet food?

A friend of mine said that she had 6 bananas a day for about a week and lost 6 pounds. She said a nutrition expert told her that bananas will help a person lose weight. I have never heard that before. Anyone out there heard this?

She probably lost weight b/c that's only about 600-700 calories a day. Eat 600-700 calories a day from any source and you'll lose weight, and I'm guessing she didn't lose 6 pounds of fat. More like 1-3 pounds fat and a whole lot of water weight.

What kind of whack nutrition 'expert' suggested that? Or did they just suggest bananas as a good food and your friend took it literally and ate nothing else?

OP didn't say they ONLY ate bananas.

OP: could you clarify? Were the six bananas all they ate? Or were they snacks? Thanks :)

OP Here:
She said she ate the bananas in addition to her normal food, except she cut her dinner serving to about half of what she normally eats. My other friend and I were looking at her like she was out of her mind because neither of us had ever heard that before, but she was very insistent, so I was just wondering if anyone else had ever heard this before.

My guess is that with all those bananas, she wasn't hungry for as much other snack food, and probably ended up eliminating a lot of salty foods for the week, and thus ended up losnig water weight.

I agree--she probably just ended up eating less other stuff. I have heard people say that if you eat an apple before every meal you will lose weight. And again its not magic, apples are just filling.

Why not try it and find out? My guess is that she cut out her sugar and sweet cravings since bananas are pretty high in the sugar content. She also got a shit load of potassium which is good for a quick boost. I am willing to guess the following weeks wasn't much of a loss?

There is a lot of fiber in bananas, it's a fruit, and they are really filling. I haven't heard it be the atributing factor but I'm sure it has a great benefit of helping you feel full so you're not tempted to eat cookies or cake.
