I have a proform that I've had for almost 4 years now and I love mine. I use it almost everyday. It has a nice long belt area so running isn't an issue and it has a shock system so its not so hard as you walk or run. I used to go to the gym everyday but wanted something at home. I couldn't afford the bigger named treadmills but this was reasonably priced(about $300 or so) and it had everything I wanted and it felt good walking and running on it. I've had no issues whatsoever with it. Its been great.

To the 6:03 person who used to sell treadmills I find it strange that you would just come out and say that without any explanation. Even Consumer Reports had them listed as good quality and best buys when I did research on them before I bought mine. So maybe you could share with us why you say stay away from them?

because Pro-form repeatedly wore out pre-maturely, had low power motors, despite alleging higher power, were noisier, often incline by a pivot point with the running board, had poor welds... I could go on and on. I sold fitness equip for 7 years at two different stores. One wouldn't carry pro-form, the other did but usually used it to show why it was worth it to spend a little more on a better treadmill.

If you've used yours for 4 years, you are in a minority. My neighbour's lasted her 3 years.

Pro-form is as you said, cheap. It isn't built to last. It is for people who don't have much money to spend- but it is not a great product. I've seen it get great reviews but only when compared to other poor quality treadmills.

Nautilus motors are generally great. Keys makes a great machine but their after care is lacking. Horizon motors are great, but last years models had terrible decks. Myself, I LOVE Bladez treadmills as their assembly is idiot proof, they have long wide decks, a more commercial styled display, ample hp, a fantastic warranty, and their construction is such that you don't get a lot of motion transfer from deck to console. Some of the Sears brand treadmills are good, depending on who the actual manufacturer is. (I"m a Canuck, so I can't be sure what exactly is available down south under what label. Up here, there's 3 major corps that make fitness equip underseveral different names, and will make products to different standards for each line/brand.)

hi OP. i have a ProForm 740 CS. I've owned a treadmill for years and use it off and on depending on the weather outside or if I'm otherwise not in a gym-groove. Before the 740CS, I owned a smaller model ProForm. it was fine for walking but my husband (who's a big guy) felt like it was too small for him & definitely couldn't run on it. My parents gave us their treadmill (the 740). When I used to go to their house & use their treadmill, I loved it.. I could run, it was big enough for my husband... however, ever since we moved it, the belt slips. No amount of fiddling w/ the tension on the belt will correct the problem! sometimes i walk on it and tell myself "you're strengthening your core" b/c i have to keep everything so tight lest the belt slip. (now i sound crazy). anyway... this long winded answer is to say: if you're buying it used - beware that it might jostle upon moving & never be the same. i personally would buy a proform new b/c i think the quality is decent for an entry-level purchase.

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of money to spend, so that's why I was thinking used. Maybe someday I can afford a brand new model. I do want something that will last a couple of years anyway. Once the weather improves, and it's light out again, I'll stick with running outdoors. I just want something to get me through the winter. I normally am able to run in the colder, darker weather, but for whatever reason, this year I have no motivation to do so.

go to treadmill doctor.com they have some great info about treadmill. i personally have a proform J6 and love it. i bought mine in 97-98 and its used just about everyday. I have changed the rollers once but its been a good machine for me

OP here again: This is what I'd like: I'd like to run 3-4 miles 4-5 days on the treadmill, and ideally do a longer run outside on the weekend. Occasionally, I might do a longer run on the treadmill, but no more than 8 miles on it. I'm thinking that I probably need a higher end one, so I'll probably have to give up the treadmill search until we're more financially secure. Sigh...it's a vicious cycle.

Treadmills are one of those things that lots of people own but not as many people use. Use that to your advantage! If you let people know you are looking for a treadmill someone might just say "hey, I've got one in my basement. I wasn't planning on selling it but I really never use it. I might as well get rid of it." That's how I got a nice guitar and a piano!

I just joined Peertrainer and so glad I read this thead. I have a ProForm treadmill that I bought about 7 years ago. I never used it until last year in January. I used it 3-4 times a week and sometimes as long as 75-90 minutes at a time. In July it started doing quirky things like speeding up, slowing down, etc., until one day it smelled really hot and just about threw me off of it. My husband called the company and was told it was the motor. So he replaced the $200 motor and it still is acting weird. Now he thinks it is the controller that is bad. I would not buy another P.F. either, but am wondering which way to go when this one finally bites the dust. Thanks for the info.

Proform 730CS Incline problem

I have a Proform 730CS that hasn't been used all that much despite being several years old. Now we are hoping to start using it again (New Year's resolutions), but the incline seems to be stuck near the top position. I've tried the recalibration process to reset the incline, but it doesn't not move. Is there a way to manually adjust the incline to reset it or see if the gears, etc. are stuck? Thanks for any suggestions.

Problem Fixed!

After doing a bit of research online, I found a few suggestions and was able to fix my incline problem. Here's what I did. With the help of a couple more people, I turned the treadmill to lay on it's side. Then I took off the cover for the incline motor by removing the four screws that held it to the frame. Next, I removed the bolt holding the incline "piston" closer to the front of the treadmill. This allowed the motor to rotate out, so I could then manually turn the threaded rod back out of the motor. It seemed to have gone in too far and was stuck. When I had it all the way out, I sprayed some teflon spray on it to help it keep from sticking in the future. Then I reassembled the bolt back to the piston to the frame and put the cover back in place. We tipped the treadmill back up (deck was now in the lowest position) and I plugged it back in. When I put the key in, I ran the calibration for the incline - it moved up to the max, back down to the min, and now seems to be working fine. I hope this helps someone else out who might have this same problem

Same problem

Had the proform 740cs for ten years now. Used it a little at first, then not at all for several years. Been using it for almost two years, 3-4 times a week for 1/2 hour. The motor speeds up around 6.5 mph. Weird. Decided to buy a new one and give this away.
