OT, If you suffer from canker sores..

Man, it took me 30 years to figure this out!!! I've had canker sores since I was a little kid and they suck. My doctor couldn't help me figure out what caused it so finally I discovered through googling that some people (not all) who get canker sores have an allergy to Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which is a common ingredient in most toothpastes. So after switching toothpaste for a year now, I am canker-free..I'm thrilled!!! Anyway, OT but wanted to post it for anyone else who might be suffering. Eating apples and anything tomato is TORTURE when you have one of these sores so I suppose in that case it is relevant to diet!

I've had mouth problems in the past and now use nothing but children's toothpaste. Bingo! No more problems!

Regarding the allergies and harmful chemicals, I found a very helpful site called Skin Deep that analyses beauty and health products and the chemicals they contain. I was quite surprised to see some "organic" stuff in there that's actually way more dangerous than the regular products! You can see it here: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ (this isn't spam, I honestly do use this site all the time)

Wow...interesting. I had mouthfuls as a child (can't attribute them to toothpaste) and Dad always treated them with powdered alum. Hurt like heck but they went away.

Next time I'm asked about cankers (it's gotten around that I had them) I'll mention the toothpaste thing.

wow, that's a great site 2:53..I have been looking at ingredients for a while now but using a book of common ingredients that I have..this web site is way easier!

many toothpastes are now marked "SLS" free I am noticing..usually the more natural kinds..although not all natural toothpastes are free of it..Tom's of Maine for instance contains SLS and therefore is not a good choice if you have this allergy problem.

2:53 here.

I'm glad you're finding it useful, 4:58! It has tons of great info about sunscreens that I use every summer, since I'm super pale and burn very easily.
