Hide the Scale

Does anyone else out there hide their scale so they don't weigh themselves 10 times a day? I have been so good, only weighing myself once a week, but I swear, I am scared to death to step on it.

I guess I know how much I suffer to lose weight and am scared that I won't see me efforts reflected on the scale. Just curious if anyone else feels like this.

I weigh myself daily, and I keep my scale propped up against the wall behind the little trash can. I hate stooping, so that does the trick nicely. Also, I really like the idea of weighing myself in the morning when I'm consistently 'empty', so once I eat or drink anything, I don't even want to check the scale because it's guaranteed to be higher.

i weigh every morning and keep the scale in the middle of the floor just outside of the bathroom door..it never gets put away and when company comes over you would be amazed how many people step on it!

Original OP

I guess what I meant is that I have been working really hard and it scares me that the scale will not reflect that. It is not very motivating to see just 1/2 pound lost.

After reading Dr. Health's article in her blog I've been weighing myself daily and watching the pounds melt away all week. I report on peertrainer once a week - Fridays.

I hide my scale - more to keep the kids from playing with it and give me privacy to weigh nude. It's in my furnace room! Every morning a make a quick trip to the furnace room and see how I've been doing - then log it into a spreadsheet that I have.

I'm a FIRM believer in measuring yourself as well. I find that when my weigh-ins are disappointing my measurements are spectacular and keep me motivated.

I use jcpenney.com to look at their sizing chart to figure out exactly what size I am. I then look at the next smaller size and see how many inches I need to lose to get there - it keeps me going and it's not so overwhelming - it's easy to lose an inch off the waist and hips!!

Feel free to check out my goals at the link below to see an example!

Blozzom,

Thank you so much for your advice. I have not been measuring myself - atleast not since 2 weeks before Christmas. I am going to do that first thing in the morning. Also, I keep my scale down in the laundry room (so I can have privacy as well)

Again thank you - and good luck with your journey (and buying that new sweater!)

In case anyone has trouble finding the JCPenney sizing guide - they've hid it pretty well under customer service area....

Here's the exact link

To the original poster, I actually don't think it's the most healthy mentally to weigh yourself daily. It can be frustrating. Even weekly isn't always encouraging. Many times, I'll put the scale into a closet, and after about 4 weeks of working out regularly and eating better, I'll weigh myself. I also measure myself about every 4 weeks to see if my waist and hip area are getting smaller.

About 2 years ago, I was weighing myself all the time, any time I was in the bathroom. Before I showered, after I showered, yup, I had a problem. So, I actually stopped weighing myself for awhile. Now, I weigh myself once a week for my "official" weight. But, some days, before I jump in the shower, I weigh myself to see how I am doing.

I don't weigh myself at all. Muscle weighs more than fat, so I figure I'll measure my improved fitness in other ways, such as how much faster I can run, if my clothes feel looser, etc.

Yes, muscle weighs more than fat.
Definitely, you should look at how your clothing fits!

For instance, 2 people may weigh the same, but one may look a lot more fit than the other due to higher muscle mass vs. flabby fat... :-)

At my best weight, I weighed about 138, but the weight guessers (at the fair) generally pegged me at about 125...

throw out your scale at home. weigh yourself at the gym only. i had to do that since i was freaking myself out weighing myself a couple of times a day . . .tilll i realized that things i eat TODAY and the work i do TODAY won't be reflected in the scale for a few days. made me ease up a bit on myself and then when i did weigh myself, i was down a few more pounds than i expected!

if anything, throwing out your home scale will motivate you to go to the gym more often!

I am the same way. I have my first weigh-in at Weight Watchers tomorrow morning and I'm terrified.
I've been very good this week with the eating. Still drinking too much alchohol, but I've gone to the gym 5 times this week and have really limited my calorie intake. I'm extremely concerned that I won't have lost anything or even worse, will have gained!

Muscle vs. Fat

Actually....muscle does not "weigh more than fat". 1lb of muscle weighs the same as 1lb of fat. But muscle IS more dense than fat, and takes up less volume. So 1lb of muscle takes up less space than 1lb of fat. THEREFORE: it is possible that you could not see any difference on the scale in lbs but be wearing a smaller size. Just wanted to clarify! :)
