Read Body for Life - by Bob Phillips

He recommends only 20 min. cardio 3 days a week - but intensity is the key! Its has to be high power. plus weight training on other days

I reached my goal weight via dieting, with no cardio. Though I do walk a couple miles a day, just in my daily routine.

I think doing cardio is important for health, but 80% of keeping in shape has to do with diet. It's so easy to consume what you just burned.

Cardio

More and more research is coming forth from different scientific teams that short, intense interval training is best for the average joe looking to shed fat quickly, as well as for models/muscle builders/actors/etc who are trying to get lean in a short amount of time. I'm a junkie for fitness articles from Mens Health and Muscle & Fitness to women's fitness magazines (as a guy I swear to only have read the articles), and they all echo this message. The idea that 60-90 minutes of cardio exercise is needed to shed fat is becoming old school. We may perceive that we've lost more by being on the road or treadmill for an extended period of time, but in fact you're fooling yourself. If you haven't already visit the site below, it's one of many articles that subscribe to this philosophy. If you're training for an endurance event then it makes a lot of sense, otherwise, spend the extra mintues you saved on the cross trainer for the real fat loser-- the weight room.

YES 4:47! I agree. I lost 25 pounds only doing 15 minutes of cardio (followed by 40 minutes of weights) but the KEY was watching what I ate!!

I lost 25 pounds through controlling my calorie intake. No cardio whatsoever. I probably should have lifted weights though because I lost muscle along with fat.

I only do cardio 20 to 30 minutes because any longer than that creates too much pressure and pain to my body. I have been doing this for the last 2 months, and I thought the pain would go away...but it hasn't. The good news, I am still losing 1-2 pounds a week.

I would love to get in 60-90 min a day...but between work and kids, realistically if I fit in 30 mins that's great! If you're doing 30 min a day and eating healthy, you should definitely be able to lose and maintain.

Goes to show you can't believe everything you read. Or even more accurately stated, almost everything can be interpretted in many ways.

Even the article said that there is conflicting conslusion out there.

Clearly there are a number of ways to lose weight - increase calories burned, reduce calories consumed, or some combination of the above.

I think it depends on the person a lot. For instance, a person who is 100 lbs overweight will probably lose a whole lot of fat simply by removing key things from their diet like pop, fatty snacks, and portion control. Add in a few walks a day and they'll lose even more. A person who is 15lbs overweight, though, is going to have to reduce calorie intake and work out like a demon to lose those final pounds.

I totally disagree with this! The ACSM suggest 30 minutes 5 times a week for Vigorous activities and 60 minutes for moderate. So if you jog, race walk, petal fast or Doing something hard 30. If your just walking or pedaling along or mowing the lawn. Moderate

I have a link to the ACAM recommendations I will post. It's misguided articles and such that get people messed up and believing that if they don't live in the gym they cant get in shape. So they just give up!
