Triathalons - info?
I'm thinking about trying one, I'm pretty good at running and biking but swimming, not so much. Do you have to be good at all three legs to do it? maybe I should try a biathalon? Any ideas?

Hi! I'm training for my first triathlon right now! I don't think you have to be that great at swimming, especially if you start with a sprint triathlon. I've not been a runner and am a little out of shape for both the swimming and the biking, but I have a 3 month training program, and I'm already getting better... I wish you lots of luck!

About 9 months ago I decided to start training for my first sprint triathlon. But I couldn't go under water without plugging my nose. I started with just basic swim lessons at my local park district and moved into training with a triathlon group.
The first race, whicg was in October, went pretty well, and now I am training for an olympic distance. As of last Wednesday - I can swim over 80 laps in a pool!! It is possible to come that far in a short time:)

You definitely don't have to be good at all three to do a triathlon. (You might have to be good at all three to win, but even that is probably debatable...) I ran my first two triathlons last summer, and they were a lot of fun. I would highly recommend triathlons to anyone who is at all interested.
In a sprint-distance race, the swimming is typically way shorter than the rest - it's often treated as just a warmup by many of the competitors. In the races I did, I was in the water for less than 20 minutes, biking for 45 or 50, and running for 30-40 minutes. So I'd say having swimming be your weakest event is better than having biking or running be your weakest link.
Focus on swimming in your training...swimming in open water is more dificult than swimming in a pool (because you can't push off from the wall every 25 yards, because you have to pay attention to where you're going lacking the nice blue line on the bottom of the pool, and because there are all those other competitors getting in your way and kicking you), so just make sure you can do more than the whole distance without stopping, and don't worry about how fast you can do it.
Keep your goals reasonable for the first race (mine was to finish both - no time constraints...), and you can definitely do it. Then, if you really enjoy racing, you can sign up for another and push your goal up to placing in your age group or something.
Good luck, and have fun!

I'm stellar at swimming and SUCK at the running, and I'm granny-gear Queen on the bike. I'm not the O.P., but do y'all have any suggestions for becoming a better cyclist/runner?
:)

Do you belong to a gym? Spin classes have improved my cycling spectacularly.
Hills, intervals, any thing that varies the intensity throughout the workout will help you build stronger muscles, get faster, and build your aerobic base. Also, increasing the time you run or cycle can help you build speed on shorter distances. (I worked up to be able to run 6 miles in 60 minutes, starting from 3 miles in 30 minutes, and now I can run 3 miles in 25 minutes.)

Some triathlons offer a relay option where a different person does each part. Maybe you could start with that?
I have done 2 triathlons but I only do the Super Sprint option. It's really good for a beginner. It's 300 yards swimming (=12 lengths in a pool), 8 mile bike and 1.5 mile run. Maybe you could find one with these short distances in your area. The triathlon I do is going to be July 23 in Cleveland, OH...do you live any where near there?
The Cleveland Tri offers a division for Athena (over 150lbs). I'm not sure if that applies to you but it does help to even out the competition a bit.
One last thing, be sure to incorporate brick workouts. This means that you will get out of the pool/open water and jump right on your bike. Or, bike and then immediately try to run. That will really help with your training.

To the OP
what state do you live in?

I'm also not so sure about the whole swimming thing (especially since it's winter) So I found a duathlon which is only running and biking. That way I can try out two and see how I do. If I do ok and can manage it then I'll start swimming and try a triathalon

Wow, this is great! I live in NY.

That should actually make it easier. There are a ton of triathlon clubs in NY...and they probably have swim workouts as a group. A lot of these types of groups have beginners, and it always easier to train with a cool set of people and a coach.
Do a search on google for triathlon clubs, masters swim groups and the like in your area.

Also check out NJ clubs. I did the Sea Bright triathlon last year, and more than half the competitors were first-time racers. It took away a bunch of the pressure of looking like an idiot. :) Also, Sea Bright has a series of races through the summer (I think 4 all together - I only did 1), so you can track your progress on the same course across the season if you want. Oh, and very important - the swim was less than 500 yards.
