If you have a calorie deficit at the end of the week - burn more calories than you eat/drink - then YES you will lose weight.

You need to figure out how many calories in that glass of wine and how many calories your burning.

8oz = 200 calories = 13% of your daily calorie allowance.

Maybe you should think about why you're putting such emphasis on alcohol in the first place. That's enough to give most folks a light buzz. Why do you need that every night?

If you could cut it down to 4 oz, you'd still have enough to go with dinner, yet it would fit into your diet much more easily.

But yes - you can lose weight and still drink wine. I've lost 20 pounds and I have 3-4 oz of wine a night with dinner, and I make it a full-bodied red that I don't mind lingering over. Whites just go down too fast. I just figure my glass of wine costs 100-120 calories and plan accordingly.

A serving of wine is 5oz, not 8oz. So you're really having about 2 glasses of wine. Not that you can't do it, if you count it in your calorie count, but calling it one glass is a bit of a denial.

Also, realize that alcohol is a depressant, so it'll make your body slow down a bit, and may make your metabolism slow down as well. So, although it is about 200 cals, it may also cause you to burn less calories than you'd be burning otherwise, so maybe you'd want to call it 250 cals or so.

That being said, if you want to eat around 1500 cals a day, that means you have 1250 to eat, since you're drinkign essentially 250. That can be done, but you will need to pick and choose your calories carefully throughout the rest of the day. I eat 1300 cals/day, and I do it by eating 300 cals for breakfast, 500 during the time I'm at work (including lunch), and 500 after work (including dinner.) So I need to make sure that everything I eat is filling. If I eat, say, a bag of baked lays from the vending machine, for 130 cals, that's 130 cals I've wasted, because they're certainly not filling! You just have to re-learn how to eat. And you won't have much room for food treats, because your treat is your wine.

I don't know about white wine, but red wine has something like natural blood thinners. It's said a glass of red wine with dinner each night will help with cholesterol problems and heart disease.

Yup - and you can get the same benefit by eating red grapes rather than red wine. Funny how that rarely gets a mention.

Red wine

Actually, you are incorrect. The latest studies show that alcohol, in moderation, is actually more healthy than no alcohol at all. And this was with ALL types of alcohol, not just wine. So, if red wine happens to be your daily drink of choice, you are getting double benefits--- from the red grapes and the alcohol itself. Unfortunately, you teatottlers seem to die younger than the "moderate" drinker. So why not relax a little and have a glass of wine! Also, stress actually causes god awful hormones that wreak havoc on our bodies. A glass of wine or other alcoholic beverage can actually reverse this effect. It sure is a lot better than popping a pill !

I think if someone is so desperate to get 2 glasses of wine (8oz) in on a daily basis that they're seeking approval disguised as "advice" in a weight loss forum, they've got an alcohol problem.

Yes, PP, I totally agree with you. That's why Europe sucks so much. They have wine with dinner, or even after dinner, on a regular basis, and a lot of times more than one glass. No wonder nothing there functions, their economy is going down and the Euro is getting weaker and weaker (especially compared to the dollar)... uhm, wait... something doesn't sound right...

I think we can all agree that alcohol is a sensitive and personal subject.

12:26, that's a complete non-sequitor. That comment was made in the context of weight loss, yours was an over-generalization. Your over-the-top defense of alcohol as a daily habit, by the way, says an awful lot about your own issues. Just step away from the bottle, and voila, there are only 11 more steps to go.

4:09 -- fine then: wow look at all those fat French people with their obesity problem!!! Man, they are all SO FAT! Must be from all the wine they are drinking on a daily basis! And they are SO judgmental too!

OP - The answer is yes. If it's a priority to you then you can fit anything into your idea, just adjust the rest of it accordingly.

And I know plenty of healthy people that drink a glass of wine every day.

The question was not "will 2 glasses of wine make me fat". It was "can I have 2 glasses of wine daily on my diet and still lose".

And stop talking about the French like you've ever been outside our borders when the only "French" place you've very obviously been is the wine section of your liquor store.

Anyways --

Yes, I think you totally could lose with one glass a night. Just watch out for those nights that become two, three, or four...... :) (Not passing judgement; just speaking from experience!!) The previous poster was right on, just adjust your day accordingly. I drink a few times a month, but my mom does have her nightly glass of wine after dinner. She works out, sticks to her regular calorie count (doesn't add any for the exercise) and it seems to offset any gain she would have from the wine.

anything can be fit into a diet so long as you are still creating a caloric deficit. heck i could have one big mac every day and lose weight as long as i ate little to nothing else.

i agree w/ pp though - watch out for when it becomes 2..3...4...
i know when i crack a bottle of wine i usually finish it.

We can't tell you if you will lose weight unless you tell us how much you weigh and how tall you are.
