I understand that Atkins can be hard on the kidneys due to the amount of protein you eat.

On the other hand, I asked my doctor about it--he told me that the real reason why many people lose weight on this diet is that they start to eat less... :-)

One of my friends was on this diet, but quit because her cholesterol shot straight up and she developed high blood pressure (from stress, not necessarily this diet.) She also had some kidney problems for a little while because she is not one to drink lots of water... (I kept telling her that diet Coke is NOT water, but she wouldn't listen to me.) It wasn't until she had to be placed on blood pressure and cholesterol medicines that she finally stopped Atkins. She told me that won't ever go back on it again--she finally realized that losing weight would require a total mental change in her attitude and food choices... Now, she trys to go to the gym and to lose weight the healthier way.

I second the above poster. The liver gets overloaded with all of the toxins from the protein. Also, protein is burned more efficiently and usually has fewer calories which is also why people lose weight on Atkins. While I know everyone follows their own thing here and has their own goals, I think any diet that excludes veggies, even in the first bit, must be questioned.

LOL--typing too fast... that should have been "tries", not "trys"...

Ditto and other problems

I tried Atkins about five years ago, when I weighed about 195. I did lose about 15 pounds in a couple of months, which was great, but the problem with Atkins for me was that I burned out really quickly trying to avoid so many of my favorite foods. And what that caused was the yo-yo effect that happens with a lot of strict diets: as soon as I went off of it and started eating "regular" meals again, my weight shot up higher than it had been before.

However, I do have to say, my ex-husband stuck with it for a lot longer than I did and lost about 70 pounds, most of which he has kept off. I think the bottom line is, there is no one perfect diet or lifestyle plan; the perfect one is the one that works for you.

I've also tried Atkins and gained it all back and then some. It is very hard to maintain in the real world. You have to be extremely disciplined to keep at it. I think almost all of my friends have tried it at some time or another and had the exact same thing happen with gaining weight back and more. It all comes down to calories. More out than in. A healthy, well balanced diet with exercise is the best way. And if you watch it, you can have any food you want in moderation. Retrain the brain.
