Infertile and STILL eating for two!

Does anyone who can't have children feel like they missed out on one of the perks of pregnancy--eating for two? I mean, all my life I SO looked forward to eating with abandon (don't lecture me about how that's not realistic, a girl can dream).

So for the last year, I've just gone crazy. Yes, I've gained 20 pounds and am at the highest weight I've ever been, but I can't seem to stop.

So, what's your story?

(We're adopting, so it's all good...)

the myth of eating for two

It is a myth that when you are pregnant you are eating for 2. At the most all you need is an extra 300-400 cals when you are pregnant, and these foods should be nutrient-dense foods, like vegetables and fruits and lean proteins, etc.

I made the mistake of eating for two with my first pregnancy. I went crazy just as you said you have been doing, and gained a whopping 70 pounds. After I had my baby and was left with about 60 pounds of pregnancy weight, I certainly did consider all that extra eating to be a perk anymore.

The best thing you can do is focus on eating heathy and exercising so you can be at your best when your baby arrives. good luck!

once that baby is in your arms, you wont feel like you missed out on anything. you'll feel that she born to be YOUR baby ... Its such an exciting time! Just focus on health and preparing for the time when you become a mother. and think about how you missed out on... morning sickness!

Not just morning sickness, but back aches, heartburn, lack of sleep, hip pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shortness of breath, mood swings, and last but not least -- labor! I don't know about anyone else, but I found pregnancy REALLY HARD. Plus, I never ate with abandon -- I was really careful and gained 33 pounds, which I'm now working hard to lose!

But I know what you mean. I tend to overeat when I'm depressed. Are you feeling blue about infertility? If so, maybe try to find another way to express it other than eating -- take a walk, go to a therapist, have a spa day, etc.

I feel better--THANKS everyone!

Yes, I never really gave any thought to the fact that all that "eating with abandon" just means another diet after the birth.

Thanks for the reality check!

Off topic, but I am pregnant and NOT eating for two, yet the pounds keep piling up. Pregnancy makes is super easy to gain weight, plus your energy is down too so all of that contributes. Weight gain in pregnancy depends from person to person, but you are not eating for two, that's for sure.

if you did any hormones for infertility, that will pack on the weight and the constant cravings for food.

yes, that happened to me, the fertility drugs completely changed my metabolism.. it was unreal.. like its hard enough to deal with the problem of trying to have kids and then deal with the moodiness and weight gain.
