Daily Weigh-ins vs Weekly Weigh-ins
Pat Salber who heads up our advisory board and is an MD, has written a new blog post on some of the new research into the question of whether weighing oneself more often or less often is better.

For me, when I weigh every day or every other day, I'm more apt to stay on track. If I weigh myself only weekly and if I gain weight, I feel like the whole week was wasted and that's when I start to feel negative or throw up my hands. If I weigh more often and I gain weight, it motivates me to get a handle on things before it gets more out of control. I reflect on whether I was drinking enough water, and it's easier to think back on foods you ate a couple of days ago that may contribute to the weight loss as opposed to a week ago. Frequent weighing, works for me!

Weekly Weigh-ins
Weekly weigh-ins are better because since your weight fluctuates daily, if you were to weigh yourself everyday, you probably wouldn't get the most accurate readings on the scale. I try to limit myself to weekly weighings: Sunday mornings before breakfast. That in itself is motivation for me to stay on track.

I weigh myself every day but officially count it once a week. That blog post was extremely interesting.

weighing daily
I have often weighed just once a week and like you said ...if I lost no weight or very little... perhaps even gained then I felt like a failure..which always lead to an eating binge and I would just give up. I am going to start daily weigh in and see how that goes.

i weigh and record daily--and almost always have during the periods that i have lost the most weight--i weigh myself before eating or drinking anything in the morning, so yes, there is some fluctuation, but that allows me to recognize when i am retaining water (usually a clue that i am eating a little much salt or not drinking enough--a good reminder to adjust my diet accordingly). This time around, I also keep an "official" weekly weigh in log in my goal section on peertrainer, so i monitor my weight everyday to stay concientious, but only "count it" once a week, so i can see my progress over time. i really like this method--when i only weigh in weekly its too easy to delude myself that i can eat a pint of ice cream and not gain because i don't feel fatter!

I have often weighed every day in the past, but I'm not doing that anymore. I don't think it's good for my mental health. I guess everyone is different and different things work for different people, but it made me far too obsessed with the numbers instead of just focusing on being healthier. Besides, you can often be losing mass without losing actual pounds. Sometimes that daily weigh-in was a real downer even though I was doing well.

I just read the blog post, and its a great read and very interesting. But I found myself sweating at the end of it, and I realized how much I hate weighing in. I always feel fine after, but I am afraid going in.
