60 Miles in 3 Days for Breast Cancer *** Please read & help!

Hi Everyone!

Someone in one of my groups suggested I post in the community forum to see if anyone can help me out!

I'm walking for the 3rd year in the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk. I will be walking 60 miles in 3 Days for breast cancer research.

This year, I am walking in honor of a childhood friend, Candie, who was diagnosed (by accident) this past year when she went for an early mammogram at the age of 37. She actually wouldn't have gone until she was 40, but because she was changing insurance companies, she figured she would get a baseline exam.

It turned out that her doctor found several lumps that she would not have found through manual exams. She subsequently had 1 of her breasts removed, has undergone radiation and chemo. Her last treatment ended in April and when I saw her in July, her hair had finally started to grow back in. She is married and she and her husband have a little son, so she is fortunate to have been diagnosed. At this point, things look good for her...

The scary thing is that her doctor told her that the cancer had been growing for at least 3 or 4 (or more) years and if she had waited until she was 40 to get her mammogram, she may have had a far worse outcome. Luckily, she's had a good outlook on life and is a generally upbeat person, so she's taken things in stride. I pray for her full recovery.....

At any rate, I'm walking in honor of Candie this year, so if you would like to help me with a donation to my walk, please check out the link on my profile. I have to raise $2,200 for the walk and need all of the help I can get.

Right now, the link is still listed as the Michigan walk, but it may change soon, as I have to change my walk location due to a conflict in schedule. I am currently planning on changing my walk to the one in Atlanta (Oct. 11-13), but would like to get my funds raised as soon as possible, so all help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks for taking a moment to read this-- and if you are a woman, don't forget to do your monthly exams and to get your mammograms!!

If you are a man and something feels weird in your breast, you should insist on checking it out as well--one of my fellow walkers walked on behalf of her MALE cousin--men as well as women all have breast tissue, so if there's breast tissue, there is a likelihood of breast cancer (although it's less frequent in men.)

If you do plan to donate, please let me know so that I may keep track of all of my donor amounts. You can donate either online or by mailing in a donation form (located on my walker's page). Either way, I appreciate your time and help!

To find out more about the Breast Cancer 3-day (or if you'd like to walk in 2008), you can check out their website at: www.the3day.org

My walker's page can be accessed via my PT profile or if you need more info, let me know!! ;-)

I was actually in Seattle when the walk was happening, but did not know where they were walking or I would have been a 'walker stalker" to cheer the people on!

By the way, I just realized that they don't include our names on these posts in the community session...

It's me, Irissvb--I'm the one walking.

I'm a little disappointed in myself this summer. I only just reached my 201 mile mark in training this year.... Still have about 3 weeks to go, though, so I will walk my butt off in the next 3 weeks!

Last year, I trained over 600 miles... This year, it may be closer to 300... Either way, I plan to continue to walk until the end of the year.... ;-)

Please help me out if you can-- the donation site is via the Breast Cancer 3-Day site.... I'm currently still posted on the Michigan site (until they switch my walk to Atlanta). :-)

Think Pink!!!

I forgot to mention that there is a printable donation form on my walker's page-- if you want to donate to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-day via a check, you can do so by using the donation form.) Please note, The Michigan coaches have not yet changed my walker's site to the Atlanta walk yet, so if you do want to donate via check please send me a note so that I know that your donation is coming!

ANY amount will help me reach my goal-- I usually encourage people to donate at least $60 (only $1 a mile) but even a $5 or $10 donation amount means that much less for me to raise....

I really DO want to walk again, so please help me if you can!!

Over the past 3 years, I've walked over 1000 miles in training and have raised over $5000 for Breast Cancer research... Please help me reach my goal again this year!! :-)

Hi Everyone,
I found out that they changed my walker's link when I finally switched from Michigan to Atlanta's walk...

So, instead, just go to www.the3day.org and search under the Atlanta walk for "Iris" and I'm the only one from Michigan... :-)

Also, please feel free to follow my progress via my website:

My hubby will be updating it for me every day during this weekend! Weather is supposed to be great--I'm leaving for Atlanta in the Morning!!!
