Weight Loss and relatives
I've recently lost about 40 pounds and I'm more interested in maintaining my current weight than in losing more. I'm really afraid of gaining the weight back though (and I have a sister with a long history of eating disorders). My brother-in-law is very 'appearance-oriented' and in the past has made numerous fat jokes at my expense. I also have another relative, who every time she sees me, asks me if I'm going to lose more weight and comments that she think I look like a model. I know that I should be happy, but her comments seem so superficial and I wish she'd say something like, "It's good to see you." Is there any way to respond to these comments without sounding ungrateful for the praise? Thanks!

If a relative always asks if you're looking to lose more weight, you can respond by saying "I really like where I am right now, and since I'm not spending so much energy on weight loss right now, I have time to focus on so many other things!" Then bring up the other things going on in your life. Then, next time, the relative will have something else to ask you about, rather than your weight!
When people hear that you're happy about something, it really shuts them up - they really have nothing to add! If they think you're still unhappy, they'll want to hear about it and add their two cents. It's just how we are - always digging for dirt!
