And here I thought this thread would be about Tom Cruise and his daughter's first birthday.

Don't do it. If your going to splurge on a cruise enjoy the time as your time. Leave your one year old with someone you trust.

Once a kid is about 8 or 10, they can participate in kids activities all day, and a lot of the night. Maybe there is childcare for younger kids too. But I don't think it ever goes as far down as 1. Check with your cruise line. You don't want to take a cruise with a child if there is no childcare available for him/her, as you will want to be able to spend a few hours here and there relaxing, whether it's by the pool or out in a bar dancing.

I went on my first cruise with my family when I was 14, and my younger sister was 10. We both spent tons of time doing the "kids activities" - different ones for different age groups - and we had tons of fun, and our parents did too, as they had plenty of "grown up" time. But, we were not 1.

I actually had more fun on cruises when I was 14 and 15 than subsequent ones that I went on when I was too young to be an "adult," but too old to be a "teen" - 17, 20, and 22 (our family did a lot of cruises b/c the whole family could come, be together for nice dinners, and do our own thing during the day and evening, all generations.)

But yeah, unless it's a very famly-oriented cruise line, with childcare offered for very young children, I'd hold off for a few years, or bring a babysitter, or leave the child home with one.
