Sleeping Burns 65 calories an hour!

I just read this in a book- cool!

Here are some more calories burned per hour by activity:

lying still- 77 calories
sitting- 100 calories
standing -105 calories
getting dressed- 118 calories
walking slowly- 200 calories
swimming- 500 calories
running -570 calories
walking upstairs- 1100 calories

Ok, now I think I get the whole "Stairmaster" thing.

Yeh, but I wouldn't count it as "extra" burned calories (sleeping, lying still), since that's all part of your "basal" needs - it's your body keeping warm.

It's already accounted for when they say you need around 1500-2000 cals per day.

About the stairs number...judging from my experience of using actual stairs to work out, I'd say that 1100 figure applies to maintaining your normal climbing pace when you're just taking 2 flights. Not possible for a whole hour or even 10 flights for most people, so I would halve that figure.

And also remember that those figures are just a guide - not written in stone - they vary depending on your metabloism, how hard you are going. Another good point to remember is that it is not just the calories you burn during exercise, but in recovery too you are above your basic rate and therefore buring calories, so think of it something like this - run for an hour (800 cal approx) and take 30 minutes to fully recover then that might mean that in that hour your burnt 100 calories. And that is better than sitting watching Opera anyday!!
