Occasional Smoker

I am an occasional smoker. A "social smoker" But I still want to (and need to) quit! Is there anyone out there who was like me that found a way to quit? I would really appreciate hearing people's strategies.

I am too! I can go for weeks without smoking but the minute I am around someone who is smoking I have to bum one... and its sad, because while when I'm smoking it is satisfying, a cigarette is never worth my health and my life! Its so easy to think that you aren't hurting yourself like a "real smoker" because you don't smoke a lot but every time we smoke one cigarette, it is shortening our lives.

I have already made a commitment to quit stupid social smoking, about a week ago. I haven't yet been in a social situation where I want to smoke but when I am I know it is going to be harder to resist than I am expecting! But just like weight loss, as hard as it is to give it up and sometimes you feel like you can't do it, you just have to make the decision and realize that every day is a new day to keep your commitment to yourself.

For a social smoker, there is no physical addiction, so it's really just something you have to choose to do. It may not be easy, but you just have to persevere. One way that'll help is to not drink, or not drink too much. Then you'll have more impulse control. Just because you enjoy smoking doesn't mean you should do it. Just because you'd rather be smoking than not smoking, well, that doesn't mean you get to smoke.

the way i stopped was when i got a whif of my hair and sweater after being in a bowling alley where the majority of patrons smoked. every time after that that i would crave a butt, i remembered that odor and realized that i didn't want to make that impression on people or represent myself that way. i wear nice smelling body lotion and body splash and don't want to waste my time or $$ on those items just to end up smelling like an ashtray.

also imagine that at any given minute you may meet the love of your life. do you want him to remember you as the girl who had caught his eye, but too bad because she was smoking?
