Help..?

Sorry for the TMI, but I really do need help. What are some good foods to eat if you are constipated? I can't go! I already took fiber and even a few probiotic tablets, and I ate a huge salad today. It doesn't seem to be working. What should I eat?

I was reading that fiber is slowly digested so it actually takes longer for it to digest so that doesnt really help. You need some fat.

Spicy food (specifically chilis) speed digestion.
Coffee works for an awful lot of folks.
My mom swears by apple juice or sauce.
Running gives new runners the "trots" within 15 minutes - try jogging.

tried coffee....this is the next day and still no luck. My problem may be worse than I thought. Had spicy food the day befre yesterday. I'll try apple juice... I think I have some. And watermelon only makes me pee....

Dried fruit -- in particular raisins, apricots, and prunes -- are wonderful. If you like juice, try prune juice. Good luck

I guess if all else fails you could try an exlax. It will help with the discomfort you are in now. Avoid bananas! :)

Whenever I'm constipated, I pop open a can of fat free refried beans and eat a serving. Normally I don't like canned food but I keep a couple cans handy for this very thing. I also drink a lot of water and go for a walk to aid in digestion. After a few hours, this does the trick for me. Good luck.

There are a few things that work for me and most of my family.
The number one is cabbage. I put cabbage in lots of different foods so that you can't even tell it's there and my mom is always asking "what did I eat that woudld do this?"
Pasta but large amounts of it does it for me.
I have recently found that coffee does too.
Dried prunes for sure but it may take a few.
There are pills you can get from a pharmacy. Docusate is what moms were called. It helps but you may have to take a few ask the pharmacist.
Oh and oatmeal.
I think it's the bulk of many foods. But it doesn't take much cabbage to work for me. Either cooked or uncooked.
For a low cal side dish I "Fry" in Pam shredded cabbage and an onion sliced. Salt and pepper to taste. If you like you can add a tiny bit of splenda to take the edge off if it seems slighly bitter but I like it the way it is.
Hope that helps.

Prune juice works all the time, a couple of 8oz in a day usually does the trick. I would avoid the exlax and go for the milk of mag if your going to go that route. Lots of water.

OP- looking at what you eat maybe you should add complex carbs like oatmeal ( not instant), brown rice or black soy beans. I'm on a low carb plan and when I add a little of these foods, things move along a lot easier.

Yeah...go for real fiber. If you are several days in call your MD...they can give you stronger stuff. There are suppositories too and the last resort is the enima.

A friend of mine swears by hot prune juice and walking around for about 10 minutes.

But if you have long term miserable constipation get some medical help. Hope you feel better soon!!
