EMAIL THREAD
For all you sweets lovers
I was in the kitchen at work just now heating up my lunch and I saw a big tin of chocolate covered "everything". Mmm chocolate. Then I thought to myself, the chocolate covered pretzel or the peanut chocolate cluster would taste good I'm sure, but I'd much rather have a beautiful chocolate truffle or a piece of chocolate lava cake with a drizzle of raspberry sauce. So this thougth might help those of you who crave sweets like me turn them down more often...
Set aside one day each week where you will dine out for dessert. Go out and enjoy that artistic sweet creation, and tell yourself when you turn down the little things all week that you're saving up for that "to die for" dessert on Friday night!

Excellent Idea!!!
I do something very similar to that. If I'm training for a race, I set goals for myself (certain distance of running), and if I reach that goal, then I treat myself on either Saturday or Sunday evening. If I don't reach the goal, I don't get the treat!

I love this idea. Sometimes I find myself eating something that someone offers at work and later thinking "it wasn't even that good. why did I bother!?" I like the idea of having special treats that are really worth it, and avoiding the other temptations along the way that add up so easily... and often aren't that good anyway.

I say, if you're going to eat dessert, make it a really good quality one, so you'll be truly satisfied!

I also like that ideaand have tried it many times. It doesn't always work for me though. OnceI get that one dose of sweets, i can't stop...I feel like i need it again te next night! So what is palnned to be 'Treat Night' suddenly turns into 'treat week'!
Then before I know it, It's the original 'treat night' again and the clycle starts over!
Anyone have any suggestions??

There may be some association in your brain that makes you crave sugar. For me, growing up we were allowed to have dessert after dinner every night if we'd been "good", so after dinner as an adult I'd think "I've been good, I deserve this". It took a while for me to figure that out...now once a week I buy a single portion dessert from a bakery. I also keep sugar free jell-o in the fridge so I can have a little something sweet on other days.

my big weakness is chocolate, --and once i start, i really can't stop, but i have found a great solution. when i am craving chocolate or dessert i make myself a special hot chocolate creation -- soy milk (i use plain, lite--you could also use nonfat milk), heaping spoonful of unsweetened cocoa powder, and a packet of stevia (a natural sweetener--you can use splenda too, but i prefer natural stuff, and splenda makes my mouth feel weird)
it is really chocolatey, a little sweet, filling, and high protein/low carb/low fat--very satisfying.

I second the chocolate milk idea. It takes time to prepare, and that helps to slow you down, too, so that you think about what you're consuming. Color me crazy, but I also find that having an orange after dinner helps to cut my craving for sweets. You have to sit there & peel the orange to eat it.
I love these suggestions. This whole holiday has been one big "weak moment" for me. This thread is helping me remember my own coping mechanisms.

I love the idea od stevia and real chocolate. My standby is the light fudge bar. It is right there and fat free and takes a while to consume so I feel like I've had a dessert.

If I have a craving, I eat a large square of the fine chocolate. I love the Ritter sport brand. If it's rich and tastes good, I will stop at 1 large square. If it's low grade, I eat the whole bar.

i find i have to keep it out of the house, if its here, i'm gonna eat it!

Doesn't a big treat throw your week's work down the drain? Or do you replace a meal with the treat?
The choco milk idea is a good option, just wondering about the treat though...

I agree - a real dessert in a restaurant could easily be 1,000 calories, or more! I can't imagine actually ordering one and eating it! It'd be a huge setback!

Decide for yourself if you really want that dessert. Determine what's more important to you, keeping in mind what you have to do the following few days to balance out the extra calories consumed from the treat. If you really want that dessert, have a couple bites of it, making sure you truly savor the taste. Or you can try sharing it with somebody! Share the wealth! =]
The chocolate milk trick is usually what I do to try and curb cravings too--chocolate cravings. Or I eat a piece of dark chocolate. Drinking unsweetened hot tea also helps me. Either that or I opt for a piece of fruit.
