Hungry?

I have this problem that I can't seem to decide when I'm hungry. I often don't know if I eat because I actually want food or just because my brain says its "meal time".

How do you differentiate between actual hunger and emotional/convience eating?
I have similar problems deciding when I"m full.

That's a great question. I have problems with the same thing!

It's hard to say without knowing more. If you analyze what you've eaten so far for the day and the calories or nutrients are really low, I think you will want food even if you don't feel hungry because your body needs it. It's impossible to say what's going on and it might be the sort of question you want to take up with a doctor or nutritionist.

For me, I know I'm actually hungry (and not just thinking "meal time!") when real foods sound good to me. When I want to eat a salad or fish or stir fry, I know that I need food. However, when cookies or pudding or chips sound good, I know I'm just wanting food for other reasons, and I try to drink a cup of tea or something, and not eat.

Oh, and for deciding when I'm full - that's harder for me, but I try to serve out small portions of what I'm eating, eat that, and then wait 20 minutes. Then, if I still want more, I get some. Otherwise, I know I'm done.

I drink a glass of water before I eat I find it helps thinking I'm full. Also hunger pains only last 14 minutes so go outside for a walk to get the mail or do dishes etc. I'm retired so it's hard for me not to eat all the time. I'm on the computer alot and always have a full glass of water beside me or gum. This time of year is hardest for me another month or so I'll be able to get out and do garden work. Keep up the good work everyone.
