every day or once a week?

AOL had this post about how you are likely to lose more weight if you weigh yourself everyday. Personally, I disagree--I can gain or lose 3-4 pounds overnight. I prefer to weigh myself on Monday morning; just before I hop in the shower. I figure that's the best way to get an average. Opinions?

Both

I weigh every day for accountability but only count my weekly weight from the same day each week. It works for me. I don't get too obsessive about it though.

every day. Then I know where I am, when to cut back etc. Totally works for me.

There was a long thread on this same topic a few weeks ago. Personally I usuallly weigh myself once a week at the gym where they have a more accurate scale than the one I have at home. One theory I've read about why the group that weigh themselves every day lose more than those who don't is a case of the chicken or the egg. Are they eating right and exercising already, so they are more inclined to weigh themselves more often than those who are slacking off and therefore avoid weighing themselves as frequently. Is weighing in daily lead to weighloss, or does weightloss lead to weighing in more frequently? Which one is the cause and which one is the effect?

Everyone's weight is up or down on a daily basis but if you weigh yourself everyday and average it out you have your real weight. BECAUSE EVERYONE KNOWS THAT YOU HAVE TO EAT 3500 CALORIES ABOVE WHAT IT TAKES TO SUSTAIN YOUR CURRENT WEIGHT TO GAIN 1 POUND! So weighing yourself on a daily basis and seeing one thing one day and the next day is 1-2 pounds higher you would have to be stupid to think you really gained that much over night! I don't know how or why so many people freak out over that.

there was a posting on here awhile back showing a formula to enter in Excel to calculate your trend weight. i never weighed myself before because i was obsessive about it, but this gave me a detached feeling about it--almost like i can look at it objectively or scientifically. i've been weighing myself daily since then, and it has really helped me stay accountable and focused. if you have a history of eating disorders (like i do) you will want to proceed with caution.

THE REASON PEOPLE FREAK OUT ABOUT IT is often because they have eating disorders. Show some sensitivity.

Even people who have eating disorders can't gain 2 pounds in one day, they would have to eat about 9000 calories to gain 2 pounds overnight and of course depending on what they ate they would have to not do any kind of physical activity lest they burn a single calorie. Granted there are some who go the other way and lose weight a pound or 2 overnight but that is not what was asked originally. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people in my groups freak out about weight gain on a daily basis knowing full well that they didn't eat anything really bad or consume those kinds of calories.
Weighing yourself everyday makes you accountable, you just need to realize that water, salt and other factors will have an affect on your daily weight. Studies show that people who weight themselves everyday keep the weight off. This is a fact. If you weigh every day you see the weight creeping up on you and hopefully do something about it so all your hard work wasn't for nothing.

To the above poster

I'm not gonna lie, I've made posts here freaking out about gaining weight overnight, I know you cant actually gain 5 pounds overnight etc etc but I think sometimes we just need some support and someone else to remind us of these facts. Sometimes if I over ate for the whole weekend and the scale says I weigh much more, I wonder whether or not the lower number from earlier in the week was just bullshit, its hard to trust scales! So I know it gets irritating but we're all here to get support and advice on our own personal issues, this one may not be yours but I'm sure you have one or two or you wouldnt be here. Theres no need to throw around insults ...no one here is stupid, we 're all just coming from different places :)

The point about eating disorders was not to say that somebody would actually gain that much weight if they have an eating disorder. it was to say that people with eating disorders tend to be very sensitive to the topic or have problems with perception. why be so angry? this is supposed to be a site where people get support, not get lectured at.

I Weigh Daily, More or Less

I have weighed daily for the past several years and used the average weekly result as my weight.

Works fine for me,

be consistent in time of day

I recommend weiging yourself in the morning before you eat or drink. That should be fairly consistent, and you don't have to worry as much about whether you are weighing the food you just ate. Of course if you eat a big meal just before you go to bed, you'll see a sudden gain.

Doesn't matter if your scale is truly accurate -- what matters is relative gain or loss.

Try weighing once a day to keep track, but only "count" a once-a-week weighing (every monday, say), so you can see a trend over time.

I've started weighing myself daily about three weeks ago. I never really weighed myself on a regular basis before this. I also track my weight on a spreadsheet and track the trend weight. I can't believe how helpful this has been. I can't report any dramatic results on the scale (only a few pounds) but doing this has helped me look at my weight more subjectively and see this as a process rather than obsess about numbers like I used to.

Gaining weight overnight/during the day

I have actually gained 8 to 10 pounds in one day on record with a Doctor. The Doctors don't even know what to think, other than... this isn't normal and there is a medical condition behind it. For the record, the day I gained 10 pounds between the hours of 6:30am and 7:30pm, this is what I ate: For breakast, a
6oz protein shake (110 calories); For lunch, Lima beans (GG) 250 calories; For Dinner, Green Peas with Pearl Onions (GG) 250 calories; no snacks. I swelled up to the point that I looked as if I was 6 months pregnant, short of breath, hard to breathe, and no I am not allergic to any of the foods I eat....I'm still a medical mystery to the Doctors.

officially I weigh in once a week at my WW meeting but over the course of the week I may weigh in on several mornings. I usually weigh myself on Monday's b/c that helps keep me on track on the weekend.

I think it's fine to weigh in daily/weekly/monthly whatever you like as long as you are consistent about the time of day and that you expect/anticipate things like when you eat a lot of salt in a day, you WILL weigh up due to water retention. Also if you are female, there is no way around that for some days of the month, your body will weigh up and that has nothing to do with food - unless of course you are indulging your food cravings that time as well :)

Just keep it relative and see it for what it is vs. getting all obsessive about it and expecting the scale to ALWAYS make sense. The body is complex. You have to look at the big picture - whether you are down over all.

every day or once a week? Never if possible

One thing i have never had in my house is scales, they are bad for the mind. Judge yourself by how your clothes feel on you and how you feel about yourself. For people losing weight it can be a mind controling vicious circle when one day you weigh more the day after you weigh less, you then become addicted jumping on them when you nip to the toilet etc etc. If you are going to weigh yourself do it once every two weeks at the same time on the same day. We all know as women when its the time of the month we can all creep a couple of pounds on and then when we have finished a couple of pounds off so i think once every two weeks is fine.

I weigh myself every day but then enter it into a chart on physicsdiet.com, which give me a moving average based on the last several days, and over time shows the general trend in my weight. it seems a lot more accurate than just looking at the scale weight.
