Oatmeal: No Good? So Good?

I need to keep my cals as low as possible and I've always heard that oatmeal is great for losing weight.

The thing is, it's SO high in carbs that it terrifies me! I do want to start varying what I eat, though.

Any suggestions on WHEN to eat oatmeal/how much/good recipes/what to buy?

The less prep time, the better! I'm usually too busy with school and hmwk.

Thanks everybody!

I always have oatmeal just before I am going to do a killer workout (major cardio), or if I didn't have a chance to eat it before, I eat it after.
I have the non flavored with skim milk and add fruit for taste

Oatmeal is a whole grain so it is great for you. It has lots of fiber too. I am talking old fashioned rolled oats here...not the quick stuff. I just add boiling water (my tea water) until it is submerged. Stir a little and microwave it (length depending on your microwave oven). I microwave for 30 secs. I let it sit a minute or so then I eat it. Sometimes I add a little cinnamon or some crushed walnuts...but mostly I eat it plain.

be careful...

..some of the instant oatmeal packet flavors (like maple and brown sugar) can have as much as 12-14 g of sugar per serving!! I had to stop giving it to my kids when I noticed.

The newer Quaker Weight Control oatmeal has a little less, and some added protein I think. But you could always just go with a cannister of quick cooking oats and add honey or fruit to make it sweeter.

Don't worry about the carbs. You need carbs in your diet and oatmeal is great way to get them.

Soooooooo Good!

i eat the real kind, not instant. the oats are huge and so much more filling and knowing that they haven't had all the goodness smashed out of them making them instant is a bonus!

My friend who is a trainer told me to eat oatmeal sweetened with honey only (no sugars or syrup), eaten with a banana before I do a cardio workout. He encouraged me to do this in the morning (which I hate working out in the morning) because it will get my body burning fuel faster and longer during the day.
