Fat Clothes

What are/did you do with the clothes that are too big for you now? Did you give them away/sell them? Or, did you keep them just in case you need them again?

I really want to give mine away but the fat girl inside of me is afraid. Plus, some of the clothes I really like and it's hard to get rid of them even though I can't wear them.

Your thoughts?

Let them go to make someone else happy. You are not that person anymore. If you love the fabric, make a quilt out of the material.

I disagree with the last poster

Unless you have limitless funds or the fat clothes are drastic sizes from what you are now- keep them and have them altered.

If you went down 2 sizes, keep them they way they are
If you went down 3 or more and have stayed that way- alter them
If you went down 4 or more, give them away- the alteration can't help them!

Congratulations!

I have been altering my jeans- I turn them inside out and sew a new seam down the outer edges. It takes a denim needle and it is tough starting at the waist-you might hit a belt loop (which you could remove before you start if you want)- Start sewing in about a half inch or more depending on how loose they are- and taper down to about the calf or somewhere along the knee - depending on the cut of the leg. I wear my shirts hanging out anyway, so no one notices the extra seam in there.

I recommend donating them. I just pulled out some jeans from my closet that no longer fit and added them to my charity pile. I used to hang on to clothes that were too big using the excuse that I might need them when I'm pregnant. Really I didn't have faith in myself to lose weight and maintain. Those fat clothes were there as a fallback. No more fallback. Get rid of them and don't look back!

I went down about 3 sizes several years ago (ramen and spaghetti malnutrition diet) but I haven't gained that weight back. I had no money for new clothes, but fortunately had a lot of jeans from high school that I could fit into again, but most of my nicer dresses just hung on me. I resisted for awhile but finally got rid of them by donating. Every once in awhile I wish I had those nice outfits, but I remember that they didn't fit anymore, and even more importantly, I don't EVER want to fit into them again. So now I have to maintain or lose weight or else I don't have anything to wear. If you can permanently alter your clothes, do that, but if you can't, get rid of them!

I am in the alter-the-ones-you-really-love camp. Even if you have to take them to a seamstress or tailor - it is generally cheaper than replacing them. A good one will tailor them to fit your personal shape and you might end up liking them better than you did when they were off the rack. However if you have enough clothes and do not have the means to alter them yourself, or find someone who can, then there is no lack of worthy charities.
