Shin Splints!!

I have just gotten into running and am surprised to enjoy it so much. I think I've over done it as today I seem to have developed shin splints on my left side. Any advice for healing quickly and getting back to my routine soon without seriously injuring myself?

I get those too...and I'm just walking! But I try to bear with it. Well, today I used my sister's shoe inserts and the pain went away...so I need to get myself a pair. I know icing helps too.

Check out the advice on dealing with injuries like that at www.coolrunning.com - it even breaks it down by type of shin splint. Ice and a few days off should do the trick though.

If you run on a treadmill, in the future, run on a slight incline; it'll help prevent you from getting them. If you run on the street, if possible, run on grass or on a softer track. That'll also help prevent them.

Running Room

I just got back from a store called The Running Room. I have suffered shin splints since I was 10. I've seen doctors, stretched, bought over 50 pairs of shoes and orthodics. NOTHING has worked.

I went to the Running Room today and they were able to tell me if I pronate, Supinate, or natural runner. I was able to try on lots of shoes (even for my wide size 9 feet :) I also bought shin supports which strap on--they highly recommend it and they come with little ice packs in them.

something I learned today--don't wear heels. I do it every day and it shrinks one muscle while stretching the other!
