My husband won't let me buy protein powder because he says it's known to give you gas. Is this true?

I like the Biochem brand -- vanilla is definitely better than the other flavors.

The Kashi protein shake mixes are really good. I've tried both the chocolate and vanilla. They're OK w/ milk but I prefer to make a smoothie with them (1/2 cup ff yogurt, 1 cup vanilla soymilk, fruits like strawberries, bananas, pineapple). Really tasty!

Protein Powder

Yes, there are some tasty protein powders. You can also sample ones by getting mini packets at health food stores and suiting to your own taste buds. Often they come in various flavors like vanilla or berry.

I am a vegan so only use the rice protein ones as most are made from whey.

Best,

gas and protein powder

Gas occurs when your body consumes excess protein from what your body needs, Most people cannot metabolize more than 40 grams of protein at one sitting so they "expel" the difference with foul smelling gas. IT is also wasted $ since the body can't handlemore than 40 grams.
One way to combat the gas that sometimes is associated with protein intake (whether it is powder, eggs, or meat) is to take 2 digestive enzymes with each meal. YOu can get generic type or brand name. They are all the same.
This definately helps. My husband is a long time bodybuilder (over 25 years) and I am into fitness too. I know this will help. Protein is very important for muscle and the cells. So do not avoid it because of gas fears. Hope this helps.

Aren't some of the protein powders made with high fiber or lactose? I'm lactose intolerant so I have to stay away from the proteins with Lactose. I don't find too much problem with gas, but then again, I'm not drinking more than 1 shake a day...(I do find that the high fiber proteins cause gas....)

this is an interesting video. Jackie interviews Dr. Fuhrman and asks what he advises world class athletes in terms of protein consumption:

Trader Joes Whey Protein powder in chocolate is pretty yummy, in my opinion :) I usually half the serving size and put it in nonfat milk.

Good tasting protein Shakes

Finding a good tasting protein shake can be challenging. I have spent a ton of money trying to find something that works for me. Fortunately, there are now, some brands that have single serving packages that you can buy before you buy a big bottle. The pea/ rice protein that I am most fond of is: Vega Protein Smoothie. The flavours are, vanilla, tropical tango, bodacious berry and Chocolate. I started with the chocolate and now like all of them. They have 15 grams protein,2 serving of veggies, 80 calories and 4 g. Of carbohydrates. I try to increase the protein by adding an additional 1/2 cup of pasteurized egg white ( if you are not allergic to eggs). so it is then a total of 29 g. Of protein. Protein shakes also taste better if you add a tsp. of cocoa, vanilla, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, berries or frozen fruit...they can taste like milkshakes if you take the time to prepare them. I have a vitamix blender and it blends literally anything until it is smooth. Hope this helps. The other shake that I have used nd tastes good is: Vega Sport performance protein in chocolate, it needs a bit more chocolate so I add 1 tsp of vanilla and cocoa to it. It has 23 g. Of protein, 6.2 g. Carbs, 134 calories per serving. It has a huge amino acid profile , so really great for muscle recovery after exercise.
