OT: Permanent Hair Removal
I've been cursed with having some facial hair on my chin and upper lip, and I'm looking for a permanent solution. I've tried electrolysis and laser before, none of which worked. So I'm just tweezing now. Maybe I didn't do the full course of treatment for the laser (i did 3 times)? I'm light skinned w/ dark hair. I'm considering starting treatment again (either electrolysis or laser) but I need something that definately will work. Has anyone had success with permanent hair removal?? Has laser worked for you? Please share your experience. Now that I lost the weight this is a huge confidence thing I need to get fixed to completely be happy and beautiful.

I also tried electrolysis, but didn't go regularly enough. I'm now tweezing. I know what you mean about needing something permanent. This is such a frustrating problem -- just wanted you to know that you're not alone! If you find something that works, let us all know!

I would recommend that you give electrolysis another try. The key is to go regularly and keep going until the problem is gone. Also make sure that your electrologist is certified, you may have to try a few to find one that you like. I suffered for years with this problem too. I started in February of '06 and for the first 6 months or so I went once a week for an hour. Now I go about once every 3 or 4 weeks, only for a half hour. I'm almost completely finished and it's given me confidence I never knew I had. Best time and money I have ever spent!

What about if you can't afford to go to electrolysis or get laser treatments? I don't make alot of money, but I have horrible facial hair (it's actually all over my neck). I shave every day to keep it at bay, but it is a very sore point and embarrassing for me.

Yes - you are not alone at all!
I've had really horrible facial hair (esp on chin, jawline and all the way down to the neck) since I was 15 or so. I had electrolysis (probably a good 40 sessions of 15-30 mins each) until I was 21, and it had no lasting effect that I can tell. Then I spent $1000 dollars on 5 laser sessions. To do that, they tell you to shave and not pluck in between. Well, initially some of the hair fell out, - it falls out within a day or two of the laser session - but the effect was not permanent at all.
To test the laser thing, I also had it done on my armpits (where the hair is darker and coarser and my skin is lighter - so it should be ideal - the hair on my face is not completely dark nor as coarse). I only did this a couple of times, but that too grew back as normal. So I think the "permanence" of the solution is either a myth or only true for some people.
For the last 2 years I basically shave my neck and jawline and chin every other day. Occasionally, when I really don't care, I leave it for a few days (which means that everyone I know must know what a problem I have, since they will have seen me this way on those days). After that, if I have the patience, I will sit and tweeze. I've probably tweezed over 100 hairs in a sitting, and that still leaves a lot on the neck area which is most painful. It also inevitably leads to spots as the hairs push to grow back.
I try not to think about it too much any more. That's the main reason I shave, so I cannot feel it if I touch my face, and so that I am not reminded of it all the time. But let's just say, I'm not hopeful of ever solving this problem (and therefore not hopeful of being loved by anyone, getting married etc.). I guess it's just the way things are - there are worst things in the world.

question about electrolysis
to the person who had electrolysis every week for an hour: did it leave any scars or permanent signs?
and what kind of price were you able to get for this deal?

Prices may vary depending on where you live. I live in the NYC suburbs and my electrologist charges $70 per hour, $56 for 45 minutes, $45 for 30 minutes, and $30 for 15 minutes.
I have no scarring or damage to my skin whatsoever. I recently started a new job and no one here knows about my secret... you can't tell I ever had anything done at all. I told one girl I work with and she was shocked. I would post some before and after pictures or URL but I don't think that's allowed here!
Electrology DOES work, but it takes patience (over a year's worth of patience) and diligence. You have to go in regularly or else it won't work. You need to zap the hairs sometimes 2-3 times before they are killed, and you have to get them as they are growing and in the right growth phase or they won't be killed. You can't tweeze or wax in between sessions, only shave. And you have to make sure your electrologist is doing it right... you shouldn't feel plucking - only the zap and then the hair should slide right out. (Once in a while a slight pull, but not every hair every time.)
It's expensive and time consuming, but like I said... best money I ever spent by FAR.

Here is a link to another message board where my pictures are. I posted my experience there as well. The marks that you see are caused by me, from years of picking, plucking... I still kind of have that picking problem... I'm working on it.
Also, the pictures are about 2 months old, I'm even more clear now.
I didn't get it done IN nyc, but in a suburb in Rockland County NY. I don't know what model machine she uses, but I do know that the mode is Thermolysis as opposed to blend.

You are not alone 1:35pm!!
Thank you for your honesty. I know how hard it can be to admit these painful things, and I DEFINATELY know what it's like to go a couple of days without shaving (it actually feels smoother the day you DO shave), but don't ever say that you will never find love or get married. I have been with the same man for five years now and he has always loved me, regardless. I decided to be forward with him when I knew I loved him , and told him that I had facial hair problems. A good man will never refuse to love a woman because she isn't perfect. He will see her for who she is and will encourage to view herself the way he views her.
You will find it when you least expect it. And at that moment, the hair won't matter...
