welcome! you MUST be new! it'll be interesting to see the responses to the "God have mercy" phrase! there are a lot of "hot" topics that really bring out the worst in some. i try not to respond to the wagging-finger-in-the-face type comments, but there are some heated discussins to be found! good luck with you journey!

I guess a lot of people have one thing that REALLY bothers them with misuse, and they can't not comment on it. And then someone else can't not comment on the comment, and then so on......
I'm just going to get it out of my system here instead of on the other thread: it's whipPED cream! And canNED vegetables!! Aaagh!!
Don't ask me why that particular misusage drives me
crazy
, it just does. Maybe I'm insane? :-)

you live in the UK and english is not your first language? what is/was?
it's just a few poeple who police the threads and try to control how others express themselves. these few are just seemingly pervasive. maybe THEY are actually here to improve their impulse reactions to others' ability to communicate instead of wieght management...?

Like in life I think that a lot of people feel better about themselves by putting down or criticizing others. Picking up on someone's spelling errors is a very obvious and easy thing that people can point out and say, "Nanny nanny boo boo ... I'm better than you." Just ignore it.

chat lingo rolling on the floor laughing.. I am american living in englad and I dont police peoples grammer.. umm I am the worst with grammer. I can spell but I cant type. I have this thing on the keyboard of backwardsing ( if thats a word) My letters lol like hte and ahve. not sure if I type too fast with only three fingers or I cant keep My fingers on the home keys never could in typing class either lol
but I dont make fun of people. I try to be supportive I will offer advice on certain issues. after all isnt that why MOST of us are here.. well I know some are here to riducule and aggrivate the crap out of the boards, but I ignore those types they are just insecure within themselves so they belittle others to feel better about themslves.
NOW with that said.. I do not expect us all to agree about everything. that would make life a very boring place to live in. I like variety and I like others opinions and I respect peoples right to think and believe the way they do. I just expect the same respect from them. I dont always get it, but thats how I treat people. I think people could state their opinions, but I think they could be assertive without being a agressive.
people need to think how to word something before they speak.. online we cant hear the tone of voice in which something is typed in. we can only read. so many things can be misconstrued. so we need to use more tact when we type something and think how will others interpret this, but most of us I included.. dont always do that, but Im getting better. I think this was very tactful.. what do you think?
anyway . just do what you need to do your here for support and PT is a wonderful place with just a few bad apples, but in every busshel you get a few rotten ones . what do you do with rotten apples? you throw them out. well same with PT ignore the rotten apples and surround yourself with the good apples. this anaology may sound childish but its true. believe in yourself and dont give up on this site because of a few bad apples. I have met alot of good people here that offer support and good constructive critisim. I can take that can you? if so PT and you will fit great so welcome to PT.

if you have a bunch of apples in the same place and one or a few go "bad", they emit an enzyme that speeds the rotting of all of the other apples, hence the saying, "one bad apple spoils the bunch..."

It's about being correct and exerting control and power over others. Think about it. Why would you correct someone else's grammar? To prove that they are wrong/ignorant (or to "help") and to prove that you are right (or "better").
Not everyone has had the benefits of a great English teacher or education. To constantly pounce on those who make mistakes shows a lack of understanding and sympathy for those who are different.
Chances are these grammar-obsessed folks also probably have control or perfectionistic issues in other areas in their lives. So we should also cut them a little slack and tell them to lighten up, relax and take a deep breath and let it go.
Just play nice, people. That's my $0.02.

I am not a grammar corrector ... but I don't think it is correct that corecting grammar is always an issue of control or considered an attaack. It is useful information and many people take it as such!
