Is Baby Formula Safe??
while I'm reading all of the nutritional labels, I realized that I hadn't looked at my baby's formula. Yes, I breastfed for 9 months but I did supplement and when I stopped, my daughter drank a lot of formula. Is this stuff ok?

Well, as long as your water source is safe (if you were using powdered) I'd say yes. I know breast milk is best, but due to my own mother not being able to produce any, I only ever had formula, with no ill effects I'm aware of. I'm 26 and I'd like to think the technology and research that went into your baby's formula was superior to what went into mine. I'm sure those first nine months gave your daughter a great start and I don't think the formula should pose a problem. Just my two cents. As I'm not a mother myself, I'm sure you'll get some slightly more informed answers.

kudos for nursing for so long!
I personally went through a lot to make sure I would not use formula at all so I am not going to answer the question. Plus the stuff reeks.

Buyer Beware
During the recent peanut butter recall I was telling my husband the only safe food is organic...as I said it there was a crawl along the bottom of the screen on CNN saying that an organic baby food was being recalled for botulism!! It's hard to know what is safe these days.

even organic peanuts grow in the dirt and so anything can get to them. Just because something says organic doesn't mean its totally organic, FDA is not very strict.
But generations of people were raised on formula and nowadays formula is so much better then it was, say 50 even 60 years ago. The 40's to the 60's weren't big eras for breast feeding and look at what those generations have done for our country.

I only drank formula as a baby; never really asked why. I know everyone says breastfeeding is best, but since it was never something done by my family, I've always thought it was kinda gross! Not to start a debate, though; to each their own. Anyway, I'm a healthy 24-year-old now, and I've never had any major health problems (when I started on PT, I was slightly overweight, but that was from my own laziness; certainly nothing innate in me! - and now I'm in the mid- to low- range of healthy for my height. I'm short, but so is the rest of my family.)
Though, that doesn't mean that formula is never unhealthy; it just wasn't unhealthy for me.
Remember, though, babies need a lot more fats, etc., proportionally than adults; the proportion of nutrients is way different. So the label may surprise you, b/c it'd be unhealthy for you, as an adult, but the people who make the formula make it for babies, not for adults.

12:17 your just an ignorant moron. Do you really think only Bush falls in that era? Look around you at how far we have come in the last 40 years. A lot of people have brought so much to this country in way of technology, vision, art and so many more things. I am 40 years old and almost everyone I know was formula fed and there is no difference between them and people who were breast fed. That was just a stupid comment that had nothing to do with the thread.

i breast fed my kids till they were 3 or 4. Of couse by that time it was rare and only for psycolgical reason. They all turned out very indepent and free thinker and healthy. My oldest whose 23 nused till she was 4 and stayed in our bed till she was 8. Today she is very independent she went away to camp at 10. I remeber she told me she was the only one who didn't cry herself to sleep. She also went away to college. I was always afraid my kids would be too. independent on me. That never came too. pass! always follow your heart. It is OK nursing so long wasn't for you 9months is still great!
