what is wrong with watching American Idol?
it is funny how many people put down "American Idol" ... it is a televised talent contest. It's pleasant entertainment. What is wrong with that?
on the other hand, a program that revolves around opening suitcases ...

There's nothing inherently wrong with watching American Idol. It's the treatment of it as news by the US News outlets that angers me.
Instead of Darfur, I'm hearing about Sanjaya, and that's ridiculous.

I love AI. It's the only TV I watch all week. It's a lot cleaner than most TV shows out there (no guns, murders, sex).

I agree with the 2:04 poster...it is contributing to the dummying down of America. Most people can't name the US Senators from their state or find Iraq on a map but they know all the names of the people on American Idol.

You think people can't name their US Senators because they watch American Idol? Listen, I love American Idol and I can name half of all of the US Senators ... There is no correlation. And if people don't learn the names of their senators, it isn't becuase they are watching AI. It's because they don't care. If you want to learn more about world news watch the BBC news. Or listen to public radio. Or read the newspaper. There are plenty of news outlets that don't dwell on AI. I think it is pretty cool to have a program that appeals so broadly across race and class and age lines and is just good clean old fun!

maybe some people are sick and tired of hearing about the war, iraq and politics and just want to escape to some programming that's lighthearted like AI....

Once again. It's not the watching of Ai that's the problem. It's the treatment of AI as news by many news outlets. Don't flood my news channels with Sanjaya chatter or chatter about survivor.

That's not our fault as watchers of AI. Do you think we have any control over the media and what they decide to report??? By the way, I was SO bummed that Jordin didn't get voted off last night. :)

I think Jordin will be the ruuner-up this year! I was afraid for LaKisha last night. She has such a great voice ... she just needs better coaching ... do they get coaching?
I thought they did a good job last night raising awareness and money... it just went a bit overboard. Simon was strange to watch in Africa.

i've been really disappointed with lakisha the last few weeks... she's got a great booming voice but her song choices are bizzare by using two former idol winners songs and not being able to sing them properly.
i think either jordin is going home this week (along with chris) or she'll be a runner up. but i think melinda is gonna take the whole thing with blake being second.

It seems to be cited often as a symbol of what is wrong with this country or held up as something that is bad or stupid ... both on PT and in general and it really surprises me. I could see the same being said about Desperate Housewives (promiscuity) or the Sopranos (violence) but I just don't understand what is bad about a televised talent contest (singing?). ( ... and I get that one poster is complaining about the excess of news coverage, not the program ... but a lot of people look down on the program entirely ...)
