Authentic self

I've heard this over and over, but what does it mean? Don't we all pretend sometimes? Don't you have to pretend at times to get along in society?

I agree. I think we all are different people at different times. I think the person we are when we're alone is our "authentic self". The person you are when you talk to your dog, or are singing in the shower, thats YOU. But outside of that you always have a small editor in your mind.

Well, there are (as always) shades of grey. We may have to use "tact" when talking to certain people or refrain from letting it all hang out on occasion, but that's not necessarily being untrue to yourself.

Remember in Jerry Maguire when the fiance (Kelly Preston?) says, "We said we'd always be brutally honest!" and Jerry says, "No, you added the 'brutal'."

What if our authentic self is a judgemental jerk? Then what do we do?
