Anyone else scared to lose weight?

I've been on PT for nearly half a year now. I'm still getting over being scared to lose weight. It's been very hard for me and it's an on-going struggle in my head.

I was scared to face my heavier friends and be rejected. Scared to face my heavy mother and be rejected. Scared of the increase in attention from men. Scared of the "positive" comments that friends and family give because the comments are really just reminders of how embarrassingly fat I was. Scared of people putting greater expectations on me. Scared of gaining the weight back and being looked at like a failure. Scared of finally facing the reasons I overate to begin with. And scared of not being able to comfort myself with food any longer.

It seems to be getting easier each day, but I still feel like fear is the major thing standing in the way of my goals.

Anyone else feel this way? If so, what do you do to overcome these thoughts? I would love to hear what you all have to say!

this is a link to an earlier discussion regarding the same topic you brought up. it's about judging and how to cope with losing weight when your friends and family may also need to lose weight, but are not.

Embrace the changes!

Think of yourself as a positive role model for your heavy friends and mother. Maybe you'll inspire them to make better eating and exercise habits. If they become jealous of your success then what type of friends are they? I'd say ditch 'em. Don't be afraid of the increase attention from men-it just means you're making progress and you're looking good!!! Embrace the changes and look at them as a positive thing. You are changing your eating habits, exercising, and will be able to live a longer and healthier life because of it!

Congrats!

I wouldn't say that I'm 'afraid' to lose weight but I do empathize with having to change your relationships with the people close to you. I have really good friends where the history of our relationship is based on alcohol and going out to eat and it's been difficult to change that pattern. For the most part people have been supportive but it's still really difficult, especially when they're eating delicious fried food and I have to order a salad.

I know what you mean about the attention from men, it can be a little off-putting esp. at nighttime. But in a weird sort of way it's a compliment.

I think the fear is really thinking that you're worthy enough - you are worth these compliments, the attention, the feeling of success. That's the true battle. And you most certainly are worthy of a healthy body!!!

just remember that this is your CHOICE to better your health, not something you HAVE to do. and that's true for others, too. people CHOOSE to eat the fried, fatty foods they order, and people CHOOSE to show their jealousy to you. you can also CHOOSE to have faith in your friends and family that, although they may be hiding ill-will or feelings of jealousy towards you, they will be happy for you anyway. if you don't allow the thoughts of guilt to hinder you, you will probably forget about the way other people are affected by your weight-loss soon and just focus on your own feelings of empowerment and independence.

I TOTALLY KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN AND HAVE STRUGGLED WITH THAT MY WHOLE LIFE TOO! NOT REALLY FROM FRIENDS AND FAMILY BUT THE POSITVE ATTENTION IT WOULD BRING. I CAME TO THE REALIZATION THIS WEEKEND THAT I HAVEN'T BEEN LOSING THE WEIGHT BECAUSE I FEEL SO BLESSED IN ALL AREAS OF MY LIFE THAT THIS IS THE ARE PEOPLE CAN LOOK AT AND SAY, WELL, AT LEAST SHE'S OVER WEIGHT. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE AT ALL? BUT, I'M GETTING OVER IT AND ITS OKAY TO BE BLESSED IN A LOT OF AREAS! THAT I DESERVE IT!

I have a friend who is very overweight and is afraid of the attention that it will attract from guys do to some terrible things that have happened in her past. I see that she is not happy now and has a low self esteem as a result of her weight. I encourage her to face her fears and change what is making her unhappy. You are the only person that will have your best interest in mind 100% of the time so if you dont take care of your body then where will you live

Journal these thoughts. You are emerging from a coccoon. You are transforming. And yes, transformation is frightening, but so is going into space. The things most worth having in life are frightening.

I do have these fears, they have held me back... but this time, I'm using them. I will rise to the challenge of more attention, etc.

Thank you for your thoughts, everyone! I am very slowly adjusting to my new body. I know it will take some time, but eventually I'll be fine.
