Stuck in a rut

So I have been 165 lbs for the past few years. I really don't gain and no matter how much I exercise and eat right, I cannot lose the weight. I can't remember the last time I was in the 150s. And I am only 21. My size fluctuates a little bit but nothing much else. So has anyone else been stuck like this? Its disheartning to work so hard and see no results on the scale.

See a nutritionist

Choose a nutritionist wisely and show her a few weeks' worth of food logs (that will jump-start the consultations, since they always ask you to do that and come back again). It could be what you're eating rather than how much, and s/he can work with your specific health issues, body type, lifestyle, etc. A few visits should do the trick, and if money's an issue, let it be known to your family that a Nutritionist is on your Christmas wish list. I know how badly my family wants me to be of normal proportions, and they'd do anything to help me out...and it's better than asking for another article of clothing in a size you don't want to be!

In addition to the nutritionist suggestion... if you haven't already, maybe spend a few months with emphasis on portion control. You could be making wonderful food choices but just having more of them than your body requires.

I think this is where you can stay comfortably, I am in the same boat, I am between 165-170 I have found lifting weights, is helping me get my dress size down, and in turn body fat down.
It is not easy, I have been trying to watch my portion control for years, and to no avail, so my suggestion is hit the weight room, I would start with 2 a week and work up to 4 times a week

Been There Done That :)

Thanks for your replies. I joined a gym (before I moved a few months ago). I went 4-5 times a week for two hours. I would do my 30 minutes of cardio and then the rest was focusing on weight training. I was getting ripped but the pounds would not come off and the pant size wouldnt go down either. And if I didnt do the cardio that way I would take an hour long high impact dance class. So I was very into all of that. I think I am broken lol.
Nutritionist would be great! I have no idea on how to go about that though. Is that a doctor or can you just find someone who specializes in that??

Thank you!

If you are 21, are you still in college? My school has a free nutrition counselor within the recreation services. If not, you could check with your gym. They may have experts on nutrition, or even the personal trainers may be able to help. Good luck!

Difference between a rut and a grave - 8 ft.

I am so in a rut. 46 yo, 165-170's for a few years now with temporary 50's. I get up in the morning with all good intentions, the unbelieveable stress at work grabs all my focus and by 3, I could care less about a healthy supper, stop at the gym.

Tried the morning workouts, but I leave for work at 5 am, when I 'm not travelling (yes, you'd think I'd take advantage of the hotel gyms.)

Got hooked on spinning this summer for a short time. (Husband had serious accident, which prevented me from extensive hours or travelling.) Lost 10 pounds and a size in just a few weeks.

HELP!!

These are all great suggestions but nobody mentions what first came to my mind. Have you had a complete physical lately? You could have a medical problem. I recommend you have your thyroid checked and also ask your doctor about whether or not you could be insulin resistant. If you are it could explain a lot. Insulin resistant doesn't necessarily mean you have diabetes, but it does make it extremely hard to lose weight, it could also mean you have other problems you haven't come up against yet. It can be treated but it takes a LOT of HARD work to lose weight. Talk to your doc.

Oh, one more thing. If you carry your weight in the middle it is usually a good indication that you might be insulin resistant.

Ok I am just a nut case lol...I have an hour glass figure...flat belly (have minor ab lines) and large breasts and behind. When I lose weight I lose it in my tummy (which doesnt have much to lose) and my breasts (bad because they get saggy:( ). I do agree that I should go see a dr to see if there is any possability for me having health issues. My father is a smaller man and can eat like a horse and not gain but my mother is a heavier woman who gains weight but can take it off easily to. So I am hoping that my metabolism will stay like my fathers. I fear that I am going to be stuck in the middle. THank you all for your suggestions and I will cross my fingers and pray for an answer.
