OT Doctor Appointment Advice

Ok, this sounds silly, but I have to ask. Can I make a gyn appointment on my period? It's so hard to get in to my doctor and I finally got an appointment (after waiting 6 weeks). Of course, it's just in time for my period. I haven't been there for about 3 years, so I really don't want to change my appointment. Also, I am planning on getting an IUD. Can anyone tell me the process? Is it a procedure where I'd have to be there for hours and hours, or is it a simple exam type thing? I decided an IUD would be better because when I was on the pill, it made me a little nutty. I can't handle the mood swings that seemed to be greatly enhanced on the pill.

Well, maybe a professional ob-gyn could deal with it, but when I had an annual at my gp on the tail end of my period, there was a little bit of blood/tissue on my cervix, and she said it looked "suspicious" and I had to make a whole other appt with a real ob-gyn (and get all freaked out over nothing to boot). But it sure is infuriating how they make you wait months for appts, isn't it? I would call and ask -- they will have had this question before. Maybe they can give you one of the appts they hold in reserve, since you have a good reason to switch.

BTW, if you're thinking of going off the pill, check out this book Taking Charge of Your Fertility -- fascinating! Talks about how if you chart your morning temperature and cervical fluid, you can predict your day of ovulation and just use protection (ie, condoms) for those few days. Interesting stuff even if you don't rely on it for birth control.

My guess is that you will have to go back anyway to have the IUD put in, unless you've already discussed the decision with your doctor. Since you haven't been there in 3 years, my guess is that you haven't discussed it. Also, some doctors won't give them to you if you have never had children (even the website for the most popular IUD, can't remember what it's called, says that it's designed for women who have had children!)

Anyway, call and ask for a change; my gyno was mad at me one year when I went a day or two before I was expecting my period. She said that it's hard to tell what is normal and what isn't when you have your period. Also, think about where they have to go - it's messy!

great, thanks, I'll call and see if I can get it rescheduled. Yes, I do have kids, so I should hope that the doc would approve of having an IUD. I'm sure my husband will be happy!
