Help! I'm on my 4th piece of halloween candy.

Please, please please list the reasons why I absolutely can't have another.

The office candy dish

I'd like to take a moment to thank the thoughtful folks who invented the office candy dish, pot luck lunches and any other event that calls for the mass sharing of free food. I'm young, knee deep in student loans and free is always appealing. To those who are eating the Halloween candy and can't stop- I feel your pain. Not that I'm a gluttenous blob shoveling Hershey's and Snickers bars mercilessly into my mouth without chewing, but I've had a relatively steady intake since the clever accountant put that ceramic candy-filled pumpkin on the receptionist's desk. So thank you Accountant, and thank you mothers with spare time and a love for baking.

Halloween Candy

This is the first year I have not had trouble with the Halloween candy. My mantra had been, "I can go to the store and by candy anytime I feel like it, anytime I really want it. Do I really want that particular candy that is within reach?"

Once I get started it's all over so I have done well at not starting. Plus I think See's candy would taste so much better, one of these days I will treat myself to a piece or two of that.

I agree that this year's the first good one for me too. With the exception of those candy corn pumpkins which I ended up throwing out to save myself and the 3 jaw breakers I had tonight, I've done pretty well. I don't have to worry about the office candy dish but come Christmas, comes chocolate and I'll need more help then!

RE The office candy dish

I feel your pain! Chocolate I can pass up, candy, chips and dip, cake....I can pass them all up....unless they're free. I swear I learned it in college! The holliday potlucks are going to be torture for me.

Let's get some strength here...we can all avoid the candy and cake of the holidays or have a few bites. We're doing it at other times of the year, let's make the choice to look great and feel really healthy over the holidays. I'm sure it will cut down on the family squabbles too.

I think planning is helpful

If you plan that today you will have one mini snickers and nothing else, I think that is easier to stick to than to say you will have nothing and then cave totally. Of course planning to have nothing works too. But if you plan for your indulgence, then have your indulgence, then you don't have to beat yourself up about it. Whereas if I caved, then I'd be dwelling on that candy for days. And that isn't healthy either.

Just remember, 2 mini candybars (or maybe 3) is as much as one full-sized candy bar! You would never eat 3 candy bars in one day (probably not even one!) So why would you eat 6 mini-candy bars?? They still count! They're not that small!

Make yourself a calorie goal for the day (or even just the work-day), and find out how many calories are in each fun-sized candy bar, and also how many are in your lunch (approximately!) Don't let yourself go over your calorie limit. So, think, before you bite into that fun-sized Snickers, if it's really worth not being able to eat lunch! If it is, go for it, for today, knowing that, calorically, you're not harming yourself. You're going to be hungry later though!

I've already had 3 more today. I'm really pissed. At least it's all gone, but why didn't I just throw it away? Because I can't justify throwing away food.
