I think it doesn't matter. So thanks for your opinion but we don't need them.

I agree - punctuation makes it easier to understand what posters are saying and asking. Capital letters help, too, but I find them to be less important as a visual clue.

Did you ever read that Encyclopedia Brown book about the kid who left a message for his girlfriend with the girlfriend's sister, and the sister changed the punctuation around without changing any of the words, and the note took on a completely different meaning than what the kid originally was trying to say? I got a huge kick out of it when I was 10.

Actually, it does matter. It's simple grammar and it makes it much easier if we all use it.

Proper punctuation and grammar is very important. To not use these basic writing tools is sloppy and frustrating for the reader.

yh, it totlly sx when u read stuff like ths u no what i mean? LOL, OMG, 111

Seriously, no one needs to be a grammar/spelling Nazi... but it's more considerate to everyone to write in comprehensible sentences.

I think this comment is slightly inappropriate. We're not all english majors here, people come from all walks of life and have different ways of expressing themselves. If you are unclear about what someone is saying in a certain thread why don't you just ask them instead of making everyone feel uncomfortable about posting. Thank you.

We may not all be English majors, but English is our common language. And while cultural differences exist, and we express ourselves differently, punctuation is a cultural norm.

I think it's funny how people can be so snotty about grammar and punctuation and spelling - and I am definitely one of those people!! - but it still cracks me up that this can be such a point of contention among people.

I think it is easier to read but they way the first poster said it, TIA? I think it sounded rude and you may have offended people. If you have a comment like that to make just state your opinion and let others express theirselves as they please.

I dont think TIA was rude

I didnt fnd your comment rude at all TIA. But I guess, everyone has a way of saying things and most people here are ther for emotional reasons..
This is one place where I can be me, so I cannot expect everyone to confirm to my standards.
Everyone has the right to set their own standards. I used to hate it when people made such mistakes while writing but this is no formal place .. so i think its ok to be..
Cheers

What is TIA?

TIA means Thanks In Advance. As an English teacher, I agree that it does make things easier to read when people use proper punctuation and capitalization. However, posting on the Internet is not equivalent to writing a business letter or an essay for English class, and people do have to accept that casual online communication doesn't necessarily have to be held to such high standards.

Personally, if I ever came across a post that was so riddled with errors that it was too hard to interpret and understand, I'd just skip it and not bother trying to respond. I don't think the world would end.
