I think that little, every day, is too little, but I'm guessing. It sounds like you might be helped by a more structured program with actual calorie counting. There are others here more familiar with them than I am, so I'll leave it to them to make suggestions. You might also find some kind of class or seminar on healthy eating - around here the hospitals and some of the adult ed programs offer such things now and then.

I also think you're not eating enough to keep your metabolism from slowing down.

I'm an ex-Weight Watchers member and they always used to say that you should eat within 30 minutes of waking up in the morning to start your metabolism going. I also think that it's a a great place to learn about eating.

And the library is such a great place to find books on improving your diet.

That sounds like you're eating around 500 calories a day - definitely not enough to keep your body out of starvation mode! You need probably at least 1200 to stay out of starvation mode; more if you exercise. You're also not eating any fruits/vegetables. Try adding an apple to your granola bar, and a big salad, with real dressing (you could use some more fat) and some lean protein - nuts, beans, seafood, or protein. Add that to what you already ate, and that'd be a pretty balanced and healthy diet. Spread it out through the day if you're a believer in spreading the meals to keep your metabolism up; I'm not personally a believer, I don't think it matters when you eat it, just so you eat it.
