Where did we learn these habits?

Over the weekend I went off my diet and binged on high cal crap...once I was finished eating I felt horrible and have been feeling horrible since. Today I'm back and feeling a little better. It gets me to thinking though...
why do we continue to behave in ways that primarily make us feel bad? I know that in the momemt a bag of cookies is wonderful but once its done its 10 times more upsetting than it was wonderful. And who here doesnt actually enjoy the taste of something with nutritional value...may it be berries,veggies and humus,eggs,chicken whatever...why dont we choose those things that wont make us unhappy?
When we were kids I'm sure there was a time maybe with grandparents or at a friends house that we all had the opportunity to eat all the candy we wanted and got sick from it, learning not to do it again. We learn that if you play with fire you will get burned....so why do we torture ourselves? I hope this post isnt sounding too judgemental...I'm just wondering everyones thoughts. Is food like a drug?

I know I learned my eating habits at home. From watching my mother be obsessed about exactly how much of a portion went on a plate. I wasn't allowed to have more than my "portion". There was no big casserole dish on our table, you just got what was rationed on your plate. I was always hungry, and always wanted more, but there was no more food to be given to me. So I started hiding twinkies and hoho's under my bed so that I could eat something other than brussel sprouts and salmon. The junk food tasted good and made me feel in control. So I equated being in control with buying junkfood. Voila! Here I am, stuck with the habit.

Food=happiness

I think for many people, we equate belonging, comfort, and happiness with food. What do we do when we are with friends? Veg out. What do we do at family get togethers? Eat. What did we get rewarded with when we were kids? Dessert. We've trained our body and mind to crave food, especially junk food when we are lonely, stressed, or sad because we think it's a replacement for friends, family, and fulfillment. We need to reprgram ourselves to not link food with happiness. Food only makes us happy during the short term, and makes us feel miserable for the long term.

My parents ate nothing but crap in large quantities

and never exercised, thus they weighed 250-325.
