Birthday Cake

so, it's my brithday on friday and in the office they throw one big monthly birthday party. it's today and there will be cake.

i'd like to resist having some but know it's unlikely i will.

so, here are my questions.

first, any suggestions as to how i might avoid having some?

second, can't i just have a piece? it's my brithday after all!

third, can you believe i still think this way? after 6 months of reprogramming my thinking -- and getting to the point where i know (on some level) that unhealthy things make me feel bad -- i still want to indluge. what the heck is all that about?

First, Happy birthday!

Have 3 bites. The 3 bite rule is that you can have 3 bites of anything and still lose weight.

I hear ya. I still want to indulge too.

I say to the 3 bite as suggested above or stick to 1 pc. DO NOT TAKE ANY LEFTOVERS HOME!!!
Indulging a little keeps you from binging. And, its okay to feel you deserve it, just don't over do it.

You can have a piece of cake. Just do something to "make up" for it later. Have a salad for lunch instead of a sandwich, with light dressing on the side. Go for a walk at lunch, or do an extra workout tonight. Let yourself have your rewards, just make sure to "pay" for them!

Also, a piece of cake on your birthday is okay; a piece of cake, 3 cookies, a handful of chips, and a regular soda is not okay.

Good luck, and happy birthday!

Happy Birthday!

Yes - enjoy your cake. Take one piece, sit down with some of your co-workes and slowly eat it and enjoy it. It's better than trying to scarf down a piece hunched over the breakroom sink! Then remind yourself that it's your birthday and this happens once a year. Go back to your regular eating habits directly afterwards. A bit of extra avtivity would not be uncalled for as some have pointed out.

What fun is life if you cannot enjoy these things - just do within reason and don't make it a habit or a too frequent occurance. If you beatyourself up over having a piece of cake on your birthday I cannot help but think that is just as unhealthy as overindulging too often.

All things in moderation.

Question - is it good cake? I have become a sweets snob - if it's not as good as my mom could make (or at least nearly), I don't eat it. Costco cakes? Out. Store bought chocolate chip cookies? Not even. Fancy bakery cakes? One small slice, and I savor it like it's going to be my last.

I ask myself if it's good enough to warrant the calories. If I'm not going to get 250 calories worth of satisfaction out of it, I'd rather eat something else.

thanks everyone

you're advice was wonderful. thanks.

i did eat the cake but i took only 1/2 the portion they were offering and when i took my first bite, i made sure i like it (really liked it) before eating the whole thing. and once i'd realized it was good,i savored it. it was VERY good. i think that taking the time to enjoy it made me appreciate it that much more.

and then, for my workout, i did sprints for 30 mins and then 20 mins of stair running. i worked to fatigue and am pretty convinced i burned off whatever i'd eaten.

but even if that wasn't the case, i am simply pleased that i didn't eat a heaping piece, but a sensible one.
