SWEETENER
SPLENDA IS A GREAT SWEETENER! TRY IT!
Tue. Oct 11, 11:54am
I totally disagree. It doesn't taste like sugar. In fact, when I was pregnant, I tried it and almost ran to the bathroom from an overwhelming feeling of nausea.

I think it tastes just like sugar too. I could eat it plain if I wanted to! Even my fiance, who won't eat anything with nutrasweet or any of the other sweeteners, has tasted Splenda, plain, and says it tastes like sugar! Maybe it's good for some people and not for others...

I think it tastes sweeter than sugar. Nutrasweet gives me migraines though, so it's my sweetner of choice.

i agree it tastes more like sugar than other sweetners but artificial sweetners can be dangerous so i would use them sparingly.

I am not pregnant, but Splenda has thrice made me run to the bathroom too...and not because I was nauseous, either. Unpleasantness abounded.

Splenda is what I have been using for 3 years now. I love it and to me it taste like real sugar. My husband won't touch any of that stuff cause he can't stand the after taste. So we did a test. Blind-folded I had 3 different PB, one was creamy skippy, another was Adams and the 3rd was low card skippy made with splenda, when he tasted them he didn't like the Adams, and ended up deciding the one with splenda was the real thing. Boy was he surprised! I will admitt in some receipes it does have an after taste and it also has a laxative affect on some people. I guess we won't really know what affect cholinated sugar has on us for a while.

I never heard that splenda had a laxative effect. Maybe I should try it! LOL. just kidding. I'm just like the real thing Good old fashioned sugar. Everything in moderation and I think that a tablespoon of sugar isn't going to impact my health either way.

I just tried to find sugar substitutes and this thread came up. Aren't these just bad for you?

To all of you who don't think it tastes like sugar, think again, it is sugar. My aunt is a food microbiologist who works w/ Splenda...it's actually sugar with an added molecule which makes it so the body cannot absorb it the same way it does sugar. Just an interest fact....

what about stevia?
stevia is better for you and is a little more natural than splenda. plus it helps with bloating at that time of the month. its 10x sweeter than sugar so a little goes a long way.

Where can you buy stevia? I'm in Chicago, and live right by a Treasure Island; I'd expect to see it there, but I never have... I could probably make it to a Trader Joe's, but that's a bit of a haul... What is it usually sitting near in the store? Sugars or herbal supplements?

I use stevia all the time - it's fantastic. It's an herb so it is totally natural....no chemical altering like all those yellow, pink and blue packets. It is very, very sweet so use it sparingly until you figure out how much to use. I do not like to use it in baking or cooking though. I think it has an herbal aftertaste when heated.
You can find it at any "health food" grocery store like Whole Foods or Wild Oats. There is also a version called "Stevia Plus" which has added fiber.

I made a recipe today with the splenda for baking and it is wonderful! You use 1/2 the amount you would use of regular sugar and I knocked an additional 1/4 cup out too.

I tried stevia and hated it, couldn't stand the aftertaste and it burned my tounge. Splenda is my choice I have been using it now for 3 years. Its interesting that the above poster used just a fraction of it in baking. I have been baking with it for a while now and found that you need to use the same amount of splenda as you would sugar.
To the poster w/ the microbiologist aunt, I thought I read that splenda is processed w/ chlorine which takes out the molecule so your body doesn't absorb it like it does w/ sugar?

Lucky are those who find stevia taste good.. Its THE natural thing but I cant help it.. I just hate the taste. I use a brand called ZERO

buying stevia
you can buy stevia like someone said in a health food store but sometimes those prices are outrageous, but i have done online searches and i also have ebayed it, you can get it in liquid or powder form, either works, or you can grow your own, which is what i am doing...LOL

sweetener
GOOGLE splenda - I used it for a while and loved it but didn't connect that it was also bothering me. I did a lot of reading and decided to eliminate it from my diet. It is not th natural sugar substitute it claims to be. Now I mix stevia 1/2 and 1/2 for my morning coffee and otherwise don't use much sweetener except for honey.
