Drinking Green Tea for Weight Loss

I've now just heard from 2 sources that if I drink green tea in the afternoon for 6 weeks, I could lose up to 10 pounds. Not green tea pills, actual green tea. No coffee. Does anyone know anything about this?

I love green tea. I have heard that too. I've been trying to cut back on coffee, so I have a cup of green tea every morning in place of 1 cup of coffee. I can't say that it has done anything to help me lose weight. It does have a lot of antioxidants. which are good for you. I think it even has some potassium. Just make sure you don't load it up with sugar!

i drink it daily for the antioxidants. i've heard about the weight loss from it but i really don't know. i know it can boost your metabolism so maybe it can help a little. it's an acquired test...try it iced, add lemon, etc. it's good for you, you can choke down 8 oz! :)

it probably does help you lose weight because its natural and it has a lot of good things in it, im sure it'll help you to be more successful than drinking soda. even diet pop has a lot of sodium which can raise your blood pressure and cause you to retain water

I've seen this about green tea as well. Although the more I looked into it, I found that you have to drink about 6 cups a day of it for it to actually help you lose weight. I agree with what someone said above about you may just lose weight by drinking the tea instead of a soda or whatever else you'd otherwise be drinking.

If you drink a cup of green tea in the afternoon, you're probably less likely to grab a late-afternoon snack, because your tummy is full of water and you've already tasted something warm and satiating - unlike just cold water. That's probably the main reason that you'd lose weight. If you did the same thing with another kind of tea, I'd expect the results would be similar. Maybe there's something else in the green tea too, but, I doubt the results would differ substantially.

There is research to back this up

You can do a "advanced search" on google. Under "domain" choose "only" and then type in ".edu" - this will only bring up only university web sites which brings you closer to real research and essentially blocks all of the online retailers.

For example, use this search technique and google "green tea" and "weight loss" and you get results like the one below. There is some initial research that shows green tea to boost thermogenesis.

Green tea is very healthy for you! Try drinking it cold with lemon and a sweetner or a little sugar.

The antioxidants alone can be so beneficial and for those who are addicted to coffee, this is a fantastic alternative. jasimine tea is also a good one.

I'm drinking a big cup of Jasmine Tea right now. It's fantastic-- the tea is loose and comes in an orange and black tin that says "Jasmine Tea" on one side and
"The Au Jasmine" (french) on another. Made in China. So good.

green tea often has a diuretic effect. Drinking it regularly can then cause you to lose water weight. You can absolutely lose 10 pounds by drinking two cups a day, for 6 weeks- if you have alot of weight to lose, but it will be mostly water weight.

But green tea is also supposed to up the thermogenesis of the body, so it can help you to lose weight.

Really, there's no reason not to drink green tea, and so many different reasons to drink it.

Green Tea vs. Water

I agree with everyone green tea (or white tea) is great - hence I drink an awful lot of it, especially now that it's so cold. But, I've read that drinking coffee cannot be counted towards your daily water intake. Is it the same for green tea? I drink so much green tea, I don't think I could drink all that extra water in addition to it. Thatsalota liquid.

Starbucks unsweetened green tea is awesome! just add a pack of splenda and it tastes great! plus its one of starbucks cheapest things on their menu. A small is about $1.50 and not a lot of people know this but a refil for ice tea there is only 25 cents! well worth it, and sure beats their high calories caramel fraps

I drink green yerba mate tea (it's more or less green tea, but not made from "tea leaves"- some say it's higher in antioxidants than reg green tea- I just like the taste of it) And I count it towards my water intake. Coffee and black tea tend to have so much caffiene that the water in them does your body little good. You can drink too much water/fluid. Try to drink water before your workout, but if you drink a lot of green tea through the day, you're doing your body good.

while there is a lot of truthfull and usefull info in your post I do have to clarify a few things. Green tea and yerba mate are not from the same plant- green tea is grown in japan/china for the most part (cant remember the scientific name)and yerba mate is a south american drink made from a rainforest plant- but not to worry it can easily be ethically produced. green tea has caffine in it (about 1/3 of a cup of coffee and yerba mate has more - but its a mix of caffine and other related xanthines (give you energy but not the jitters or other bad effects)

Yerba mate is made from a species of Ilex (holly). For anyone wishing to avoid caffeine, avoid mate like the plague -- it has very high levels. To give you some idea, the native _North_ American species is Ilex vomitorum -- SO much caffeine that if you eat it you will be throwing up! DON'T try I. vomitorum at home, BTW, it contains a number of other compounds evolved to discourage mammals from eating it.

not a yucky green tea

I drink a brand of green tea that is really yummy from the london fruit and herb company- it is green tea with fruit and comes in such flavors as green tea and raspberry, orange, jasmine, peach, or black currant. I drink it as a sweet end to a meal without having to have an actual sweet and it has much less caffeine than coffee so I can even have it close to bedtime instead of having a snack.

don't oversteep

I find it funny that people are complaining about the taste of green tea -- when done right it is wonderful, but the people at the coffee shops never know how to make it either. The trick is use few leaves, don't oversteep => light and not bitter.

I usually buy mine at Safeway. It's in a bright green box but if you can't find it in your grocery store, you can find it at this website, too.

I have heard that green tea is supposed to help boost metabolism and help you lose weight. However, I also think the person drinking the tea should be on an adequate diet. If you are a person that eats junk food all day long and drank green tea I think that you shouldn't expect to lose weight. With a healthy diet green tea is a good thing to drink and might aid in weightloss.

a few years ago, i drank at least a cup of green tea a day. along with a healthy diet, and a little excercise..i lost 20 pounds. i had tried dieting the same way but without the green tea, and the green tea DEFINITELY sped up the process dramatically.

2:51, what type/brand do you drink. I just added green tea to my diet--not for weight loss reasons, but for the antioxidents. I've only had the lipton naturally decaffinated, but I'd like to try others, any suggestions?

I have read a couple of articles about the green tea I just can't make myself drink it that much. Also Oolong black tea? is supposed to be good for the same thing. If I recall correctly it has something to do with the metabolism

I hate the taste of green tea, so I take green tea supplements. I feel a difference in my energy when I take them but is it shedding the water weight like drinking the tea would?

I love green tea, but I have to be in the mood for it. A really, really good source of fresh tea leaves is at Avenue18.ca. They are located in the Richmond, BC area and have an extensive selection of all kinds of tea from China, Japan, and Germany. Definitely worth the drive!

Green tea is EXCELLENT for weight loss and more importantly energy. Because if you have more energy, you'll move more and it will be easier to burn those calories.

One thing we have observed about Green Tea is that some people don't like the taste. We have written a short piece on how to make green tea taste good. We also go into a very popular and quality supplement that you can take that has concentrated green tea in it.

PS: In our new "Cheat System" guide to healthy eating, we strongly encourage green tea, and have a very subtle incentive mechanism that helps people move away from coffee (which people always drink with stuff in it) towards Green Tea and Herbal Teas.
