What is the single most effective change you have made recently?
and was it a long term thing that you will stick with or is it more of a short term thing.

Dariy
I have cut my dairy intake by half, and cut out cheese almost completely. This is working for me, helped me break my plateau. I think this will be forever.

Night eating
I have stopped eating or drinking anything (but water) after dinner. It has made a huge difference and I plan to stick with it.

Shellfish/Seafood
Nothing to do with weight loss, but I realized recently that an allergy shellfish and seafood has been causing major skin problems for the last 2 years. I even went to the best skin doctor on Park avenue and he could not figure it out. My mother finally did. Funny how mom knows best....

Water
I only drink water and cut out all other drinks except tea, and have stuck to this for about half a year already.

Quit alcohol.
Helped me lose weight, gain energy, etc. etc. I don't know how I used to drink so much anyway. Can't imagine what was happening to my liver.

change up your routine
I love to snack in the afternoon- snack till dinner (used to be a pre-dinner.) Now I walk in the afternoons with my son... and am out burning calories when I was consuming them. I then joined the Y and was working out in the mornings. I started being too tired for a walk and started snacking on carrots and other things in the afternoon. Then, AHA moment... go to the Y in the afternoon during that snacky time....

NY: Actually kept an appointment yesterday. Have not made any life altering changes as it's only been four days that I'm on this program, but am coming back and hopefully, hopefully will totally focus on this one aspect of my life.
Am so looking forward to stepping out of my obese body. I can just imagine myself walking without keeping my eyes down because I'm ashamed of what I look like.
What is it we hear all the time -- one step at a time, one step at a time.

Walking
Started walking as much as I can - above and beyond my normal exercise routein. I just add little bits whenever I can- I try to walk whenever I can in the evenings to run errands or if I do have to drive, I park in the farthest spot in the lot from store to get in a few extra steps. I slso add little mini walks during the day at work to stretch my legs and burn a few calories. I lost 5 pounds with just adding the walking and no significant change in my eating habits and another 8 when I improved my eating habits as well.

about 3 weeks ago, we(hubby & I) joined the gym. Before, I would try to exercise at home but just wasn't motivated enough to stay with it. Now, I'm up very early five days a week, ready to go. I have increased energy and am really feeling great. I've changed my eating too and I'm really starting to see the results and that is just motivating me even more to keep moving.

I joined PEER trainer!
I have been trying everything under the sun to get back into fitness. And, being here is the ONLY thing which has kept me making better choices in a long time. My comp at home is busted and so I am not logging at night and its hurting my progress- but I have never been so positively concious of my intake!
YAY!

got ALL my servings of fruits and veggies EVERY day
and that's a lot of food... This is what i HAD to eat (and had to cook it in a healthful way) - everything else was at my discretion, but you know what? All the other food just kinda falls into place, or it did for me.

Alcohol and Diet Soda
And drinking a lot more water
Monday, October 17, 2005, 5:43 PM
Made up my mind!
I realised thatlosing weight or doing whatever you want to do is more of a mental control than anything else. If you make up your mind not to be tempted to desert your diet/fitness regime, nothing will tempt you. Its all in the mind.

Juice and alcohol
Cut out alcohol due to Dr.'s suggestion. Was devastated, but feel really good. My drinking habits will most likely be forever altered.
Also cut out juice, except for one glass on Sunday.
And running. Never thought I'd do that. But love it now.

I do some form of exercise a day for at least 45 min. I park far away from where ever I'm going so I have to walk further. Drink more water!

Started counting my calories
I know this can be really redundant to some people, but it's really been helping me. I hadn't realized before that I had been eating way too many calories in a day and that is why I wasn't losing weight - even though I was working out consistently and eating right for the most part. Now I count my calories and it really helps me know where I'm at throughout the day so when dinner comes, I don't blow it.

I stopped snacking on carbs! I used to get hungry at work and go to the vending machine and get animal crackers or pretzels, the lowest-cal items in there. Now, either I keep myself busy enough that I don't notice (easy b/c this is the busy season!) or I go downstairs to the cafeteria and get a hardboiled egg or some raw nuts. The protein/fat combo actually makes me full, and for longer! I used to be starving, eat some crackers, and 5 minutes later, I was hungry again! I didn't understand how I was going to cut out calories when really I was eating far too many! Then I learned that I was just eating the wrong calories!

these are all great suggestions! im not the one who posted this thread but it helped me a lot! thank you everyone!

what?
that's all you did?
are you serious?
what about diet soda?
Tuesday, October 18, 2005, 10:37 PM
Re: What?
as far as cutting out the white, and soda....
Tuesday, October 18, 2005, 10:37 PM
I cut out almost all sweets, just a little bite here and there and I dropped 8 pounds in 2 weeks just by cutting the sugar.:)
Wednesday, October 19, 2005, 12:58 PM
did not deny myself
I cut the sugar and cream in half for my coffee, took 2 wks to get use to it. That was 4 months ago, can't stand drinking it w/ my old "usual". I also try to get up and walk more, and pay attention to my calorie intake. If I want the pc of cake, but know how many calories are in it, I won't eat the whole pc, just a few bites.

Packing lunch instead of buying
Just started last week.
So far, so good, My hubby and I have packed vs. bought lunch... I'm plannng to take the approx. $75 a week (approx $300/month and $3600 a year) savings and buy myself a nice treadmill... :-)
My hubby was for going to the health club, vs. buying a treadmill, when I pointed out that a health club will cost us $940 a year, vs. a treadmill, which we can probably get a decent one for far less than that!

I gave up drinking diet coke which I have been drinking for over 35 years trust me it was hard but now a year later I feel great. I also sleep better. Everyone asks me all the time what have I done to myself I said nothing. All I did was give up drinking anything but water. I drink ice tea once in awhile. Also I started walking everyday for 30 minutes and the inches are slowly coming off not the weight so far. But hey it's a start right!

Cyn-- I totally get what you are saying.
I have lots of fitness books and recipes and KNOW what I NEED to do, but the harder part is to actually do it!!!
I'm hoping that with Peertrainer, I will be more pro-active... I'm definitely finding that logging my food is helping me to realize how many calories I ACTUALLy consume....
I think I am going to start carrying around a tennis ball-- it seems that it is about the size of a 1/2 cup serviing of food....

I stopped eating chocolate. I think that I used this as a crutch, thinking I'll have a bar, it's only a bar. But that made me crave it even more.
Sunday, January 8, 2006, 9:00 AM
I've increased my protein intake by adding more lentils in my diet. Also cut down on the sugar in my tea n coffee.
Though I havent been working out so much of the time pressures, I've done well I think.

Lifestyle change
It is so hard to "jsut diet"; this time with the help of a nutritionist I have obtained some new insight into ways to reduce cholesterol and improve all my blood counts and still have fun as I get closer to 60.
Thanks for motivating me.
