Weight Gain and Diet During Pregnancy

Consuming a balanced and healthy diet during pregnancy will help your baby get all the required nutrients to grow at a healthy rate. At this crux, you will need some extra calories, but you needn’t eat for two people. The average amount of calories a pregnant woman needs is about 300 healthy calories more than that in normal women every day.

Weight Gain:



You can contact your health care provider or gynecologist to check the amount of weight you could put on. A woman who weighs average should gain around 25 to 35 pounds after getting pregnant whereas, a woman who is underweight should gain around 28 to 40 pounds. Overweight women may need to gain around 15 to 25 pounds only during pregnancy.

In normal terms, you should gain around 2 to 4 pounds during the initial 3 months of pregnancy and a pound per week in the following months. You should gain around 35 to 45 pounds if you are expecting twins. This would be like gaining 1 and a half pound every week after the weight gain in the initial months. It is crucial to gain the right amount of weight as it could affect your baby’s weight. You may need 3000 to 3,500 calories per day if you are expecting twins.

The extra weight during pregnancy is distributed likewise:



Baby: 8 pounds
Amniotic Fluid: 2-3 pounds
Placenta: 2-3 pounds
Breast Tissue: 2-3 pounds
Stored fat breastfeeding and delivery: 5-9 pounds
Blood Supply: 4 pounds
Larger uterus: 2-5 pounds
The total amounts to 25-35 pounds.

Diet:



You should avoid the following foods as they may contain some disease-causing bacteria.

Undercooked meat, seafood, and poultry
Raw sprouts (Alfalfa in particular)
Unpasteurized milk products like raw cheese and semi-soft cheese.
Raw fish like clams, sushi, and oysters.
Non-dried deli meats
Foods made of lightly cooked eggs or raw eggs.

Supplements:



Prenatal supplements help your baby and you get all the required nutrients during this period. You will however still need to have a balanced diet. You could ask your gynecologist to advise some of the prenatal supplements.

Iron:



Lack of iron causes anemia and many other health problems for your kid and you as well. You will need iron for proper brain development of your baby and protection from various illness after they are born.

Folic Acid:



This is vital for your baby’s skull, spine, and brain which are formed in the initial four weeks of your pregnancy.

Vitamin D and Calcium:



Vitamin D allows the absorption of calcium in your diet. This is vital for bone growth and development.
