Recommendations for vacations with optional sporty activities?
My family (mother and siblings - no spouses or children) wants to go away around Christmas to a reasonably warm destination. I don't want to sit on a beach all day (even if I looked amazinging in a swimsuit, I'd still feel this way). We're all cool with doing our own thing during the days, so I'm trying to find a destination where I can do all kinds of crazy adventure things like, oh, cycle touring, canoeing, hiking, scuba-diving, yoga, horseback riding, hangliding, etc. without forcing them to do the same. Our budget limits us to Europe, Central America, and the Caribbean. Since googling hasn't gotten me very far (though I *love* infohub.com), can anyone recommend a trip they've been on that fits the bill?

even though it's not on your list, hawaii definitely fits the bill. plus oahu has enough historical and shopping opportunites for tourists to keep the others busy. the florida keys also have a lot of those activities, plus they're close enough to miami and the everglades for a trip on the side.

The Bahamas has horseback riding, kayaking, hiking and scuba-diving. For the less adventurous there is swimming, snorkling and touristy shopping. The bars are cheap and there is dancing at night. The beaches are beautiful. They just might make you change your mind about lying around the beach in a swimsuit ;c)

I would recommend finding a travel agency that specializes in what you want. For example, when I wanted to plan a ski vacation at Thanksgiving with 2 teenagers, I did google searches on ski, travel, specialist, and talked to a few travel agents who said they specialized in ski vacations. One agent impressed me by being able to tell me where to go to find early season snow, as well as night life for my teenagers. I selected him to plan our vacation and was very pleased with our trip! These agents can be worth their weight in gold when they are experienced in what you want. They can even offer group planning so that each person can pay the agency directly & you don't have to put everything on your credit card. Certainly look for the agent's membership in professional organizations and do phone interviews to get a feel for the agent's reliability. If you like the Bahama idea above (I do!), you might try google searches on "caribbean travel specialist" and telephone some of the agencies that look professional and reliable. Good luck! Sounds like fun!
