How to Balance Schoool and Excercise

This Wednesday, September 1 will be my first day back to school for my senior year in high school. I have 3 AP courses, 6 classes total, and 2 clubs to lead, including dance troupe which takes 2 lunch meetings a week and probably 4 days after school. In addition, I have to study for the SAT and the Math II subject test, as well as write personal statements and apply for colleges and scholarships. Whenever I am stressed I like indulge in a super-high calorie starbucks, which is available any time of day right across the street, along with a high-calorie italian restuarant, and a subway (not to bad). How do I continue to excercise (cardio and strengthening/toning) and not constantly indulge in starbucks

Balance requires prioritizing and sometimes sacrifice. It seems something might have to give here. If you're not willing to cut back on what you're involved in, the easiest thing to do (IMO) is ditch the Starbucks and the Italian food. It's bad on the budget and the waistline. You could save yourself hours of exercise just by opting out of those two things. Eat well and you're 80% there in terms of good health. You know how much money you save, too? In just a month you could probably save yourself $50-100. Instead of running for food and drink when you're super stressed - go for a walk, sit and be quiet for 15 minutes, take deep breaths...all of things can help with the stress without adding expense and calories.

Does leading the dance troupe offer any opportunity for exercise? If you're active and moving around, consider it exercise. You always have the weekends to exercise, but I'm a big proponent of down time and relaxation to counter very busy schedules.

Finally, take a deep breath and ENJOY your senior year!! Don't burn yourself out going crazy!

I agree... wean yourself off the calorie-dense Starbucks and go for skinny lattes, or even regular coffee. The savings will add up quickly!

As far as exercise goes, remember that you can add up exercise minutes throughout the day. Ten minutes 3X a day is supposed to be the same as 30 continuous minutes. Instead of getting a mochafattycino the next time you're at Starbucks, use that money to get a pedometer to wear during the day. Every 2,000 steps you take is the equivalent of a mile. You'll see how fast those steps add up.

That is really tough. Best thing you can do is to always have a snack or a bar in your purse at all times. That way you won't just grab something awful because you are starving and it's the last minute. You can probably manage breakfast. FYI, italian restaurants have great veggie sides and they usually have great salad. Starbucks has a new snack tray of chicken strips with carrots and cucumbers and hummus (you can leave off the pita) and that is a great alternative. The protein tray also doesn't seem horrible.
