How do you maintain consistency?

I lose, gain, lose, gain. How the heck do you keep it going without falling off track?

What are the things you do each day that help you to not blow off your diet plan?

Help! :-)

If you want lasting success I believe you have to change your mindset. You can't view losing weight as temporary, or as a diet. Otherwise once you hit your goal you go back to the way you ate/lived before and gain the weight back. It's a lifestyle change and the habits you are creating should last forever. I try to view food as fuel for my body and not as entertainment. Working out consistently will help you maintain weight loss as well. Hope this helps, I'm just not a fan of crash diets or totally restricting any food group.

I keep my goal in mind. For me, the goal is to be able to do things without being limited by my size. Because the only way for me to achieve this goal is to eat right and exercise, it's a no brainer. I renew my commitment to eating right every time I make a food choice. I renew my commitment to exercise every day. And that's how I do it. My goal is important enough to me that I won't let anyone or anything sabotage my effort.

To maintain consistency is to have a radical change in your lifestyle. You don't stop dieting, working out when you already lost the lbs. You have to continue on your weightloss routine until your body has adjusted to it.

For me - going to the gym is key. I eat right, stick to a budget, floss, and just in general am a better person when I work out every day.

Thus I make it a non-negotiable part of my schedule and I prioritize it above all else. I do not run errands until after I've gone to the gym. If I have to work late - I leave, go to the gym and come back (this is ok with my boss). When I get home, I re-pack my gym bag before I do anything else and leave it by the door.

Saturdays - I must 'play'. I don't go to the gym, instead I have fun outside. In the winter I go snowshoeing, in the summer it's hiking or playing with my newphew or something fun. This helps keep me from being a lazy slob on the weekends and undoing all my good work duing the week. Plus I have fun deciding what I'm going to do, and it gives me somthing to look forward to and to train for. My friends are welcome to come with me, and doing active things together really creates a great dynamic.

So - that got long, but really it's being active that helps me be consistent with the rest of it. Since I know this, all I have to prioritize is being active and I know the rest of it will just fall into place. It's easier to worry about one thing than all of the changes necessary for weight loss.

Thank you for the comments! Very helpful. PP. I love that you prioritize you activities above all else - you're right, I think that is key, and something I need to do!
